Kosman, Morth earn N.E. medals

Providence — Two local wrestlers took home medals from the New England Championship tournament Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

Fitch junior Jarod Kosman placed fifth in the 106-pound weight class, as did Montville senior Joel Morth at 132. Kosman defeated Hunter Adrian of Melrose (Mass.) 10-0 in his consolation final while Morth defeated A.J. Pagliarulo of Bedford (N.H.) 3-1.

It was a strong meet by Connecticut competitors, as state schools went 1-2 in the team standings with Danbury finishing first with 114 points and Newtown second with 67. Six individuals from the state captured New England titles: Danbury's Jakob Camacho (120), Ellis Tech's Baltazar Gonzalez (132), Foran's Ryan Luth (145) and Michael Ross (152), Southington's Paul Calo (160) and Newtown's Joe Accousti (170).

H.S. indoor track

• Norwich Free Academy's Nick Fitch placed fourth in the 1,000-meter race during the New England Championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Fitch was timed in 2 minutes, 31.90 seconds. The other local place-winner was Waterford's Devin Craig, who cleared 6 feet, 3 inches in the high jump to tie for sixth.

H.S. gymnastics

• NFA's Taylor Churchill finished eighth in the all-around competition during the State Open championship meet at New Milford. Churchill finished with a total of 35.475 points. Woodstock's Paige Stuyniski successfully defended her all-around title with 38.8 points and the Centaurs defended their team title with 149.675 points.

Churchill was eighth on floor (9.2), tied for ninth on vault (8.975), tied for 15th on uneven bars (8.7) and 22nd on balance beam (8.6). Also placing among the top 25 were Stonington's Catherine Cassata on vault (tied for 17th, 8.75), East Lyme/Waterford/ Montville's Elisabeth Heikkinen on vault (tied for 25th, 8.65), EL/W/M's Maranda Ealahan on vault (tied for 25th, 8.65), Old Lyme's Britney Detuzzi in bars (25th, 8.35) and all-around (25th, 33.55), and Old Lyme's Maria Denya on beam (13th, 8.9).
