Coast Guard wraps up Superinten­dent’s Trophy

Fort Myers, Fla. — Timbo Duncan homered in each game as the Coast Guard Academy baseball team swept a doublehead­er from rival Merchant Marine on Sunday, securing the Superinten­dent's Trophy for the third straight season.

The Bears won the opener 7-5 and the second game 9-0 in the Gene Cusic Classic as Zach Serna had a single, two doubles and two triples. Coast Guard leads the season-long competitio­n with Merchant Marine 10.5-3.5 with six events remaining.

Eric Vrissis (1-1) pitched a six-hitter in the second game, striking out three with no walks. Serna and Duncan had three hits and drove in two runs each and Kyle Jackson had two hits.

Colton Cannon went 5.1 innings for the win in the opener, allowing three hits and two runs. Christian Toscano had two hits, including a two-run single that capped a four-run third inning for the Bears (2-4). In other games: • UConn scored nine runs in the final two innings, pulling away for an 11-0 win over Saint Joseph's at DeLand, Fla. Zac Susi singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in four runs to lead the Huskies. Anthony Prato tripled and scored three runs, Groton's Aaron Hill scored twice and former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski had an RBI double for UConn (6-4).

• Mitchell College lost to Heidelberg at Punta Gorda, Fla., 9-4. Francis Prettitore two in two runs for Mitchell (3-2). New London's Eddie Santiago (0-1) took the loss. The teams combined for 25 walks.

Men’s lacrosse

• Connecticu­t College opened its season with an 8-6 loss to No. 14 Middlebury in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jackson Kleintz had four goals, Tucker Mscisz had a goal and an assist, P.J. Kelleher had three assists and Ben Parens won 13-of-18 faceoffs and had six groundball­s for Conn.

Women’s lacrosse

• Connecticu­t College lost to Middlebury 19-4 in a NESCAC game which was the season opener for both teams. Toni Balzotti had two goals, Julia Loesch had two assists, Jamie Navoni and Annie Cornbrooks also scored and Hannah Donegan had an assist for Conn.

College softball

• Coast Guard opened its season by splitting a doublehead­er at the PFX Spring Games at Clermont, Fla. The Bears lost to Emmanuel 15-14 in eight innings before beating Muhlenberg 4-3 in nine innings.

Against Emmanuel, freshman Courtney McKenna was 5-for-5 with a grand slam, five RBI and four runs scored. Casey Cruzpino homered, doubled and also drove in five runs. The Bears beat Muhlenberg on Sarah Cammuso's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

• UConn split a doublehead­er at the Coastal Carolina Invitation­al, beating North Kentucky 11-0 after losing to North Dakota 4-0. Freshman Carli Cutler drove in three runs, two on a double, in the second game for UConn (5-7).

• Ohio Northern beat Mitchell College 9-0 in five innings in the PFX Spring Games at Clermont, Fla. Kaitlin Surdej pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk. Mitchell is 0-3.

H.S. fencing

• McKenna Mason of Fitch won the girls' epee on Saturday at the Connecticu­t High School Individual Fencing Championsh­ip at New Haven. Also making the top 10 were Fitch's Kendall Morales (fourth) and NFA's Alaina Sminkey (10th). In girls' foil, Amanda Cilley of NFA was third and East Lyme's Emily Rogers finished seventh. Ian Peitzsch of East Lyme was fifth in boys' epee. The state team championsh­ip is Saturday at NFA.
