No. 7 NFA boys beat No. 26 Naugatuck in Class LL tournament opener

Norwich — Seventh-seeded Norwich Free Academy overcame a sluggish start with with dominating second and third quarters as the Wildcats went on to defeat No. 26 Naugatuck 48-35 in the first round of the CIAC Class LL boys' basketball tournament on Monday night.

The Wildcats (17-5) trailed 14-7 after one quarter, but opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run and third quarter with a 7-0 run to build a 31-18 lead that swelled to 40-20 after three quarters.

Aidan Miller led NFA with 14 points while Tyler Sebastian added 13 and Seth Thomas 10.

NFA will host No. 10 Fairfield Warde, a 55-54 winner over No. 23 Xavier, in Wednesday's second round at 7 p.m. In other games: • No. 27 Stonington was ousted from the Class M tournament, losing 70-56 to No. 6 Immaculate of Danbury in the first round. Stonington was outscored 24-12 in the third quarter. Connor Woodworth made five 3-pointers for 15 points, R.J. Parrilla scored 12 and Lennox Deer had 10 points for the Bears, who finish 8-14.

College baseball

• Kyle Jackson's two-run single in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and led Coast Guard Academy to a 6-4 win over Merchant Marine, completing a three-game sweep at Fort Myers, Fla. Dustin Reeder (1-1) earned the win, allowing four hits and three earned runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Pawcatuck's Brendan McNeil, who doubled, and Jeremy Lhotka had two hits each for the Bears (3-4).

• Bluffton scored a run in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and held on to beat Mitchell College 3-2 at Port Charlotte, Fla. Garet Griffin singled and tripled for Mitchell (3-3). Bryton Ferris started for Mitchell and allowed one earned run over eight innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

College softball

• Coast Guard won a pair of games at Clermont, Fla., beating Drew 136 and Immaculata 12-4. Courtney McKenna, Emma Hvozdovich and Casey Cruzpino had five hits each, Cruzpino homered and drove in five runs, McKenna had four RBI and freshman Claire Hurley of Waterford had four hits, scored four runs and drove in three for Coast Guard (3-1).
