Groton — Robert C. Carter, 89, of Groton passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London.

Bob was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in Nanticock, Pa., to the late Lionel and Ezura (Smith) Carter. He was married on April 29, 1950, in Boston, Mass., to the late Marie (Speranza) Carter. Marie passed away on Aug. 11, 2015.

Bob was a Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, having served his country from 1944 until his retirement in 1966. He then began a 22-year career working for Sears, Roebuck & Co. as a service technician. Mr. Carter was a longtime member and past exulted ruler of the Groton Lodge of Elks. His other membership­s include life member of both the Mystic VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. His survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and James White of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Robert C. Carter Jr. and his husband, Arthur Robbins, of Sarasota, Fla., and Joseph J. Carter and his girlfriend, Christy Christense­n of Groton; three grandchild­ren, one great-grandchild and two great-great-grandchild­ren.

Bob had also been predecease­d by a sister, Ruth Evans; and a brother, Frank Carter.

A reception to honor his life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Groton Lodge of Elks. There are to be no visiting hours, and his burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that donations be directed to the Groton Lodge of Elks, 700 Shennecoss­ett Road, Groton, CT 06340.
