A FIELD GUIDE TO THE GENESIS COSTUMES OF PETER GABRIEL

- — Rick Koster

For those who will attend Friday's Garde concert by the Canadian Genesis tribute band The Musical Box, you'll experience an array of personae presented by original vocalist Peter Gabriel, which he used to add visual context to the expansive narratives of the band's songs — or even songs within the songs. A representative sampling: Flower Head — Perhaps the most iconic of all, Gabriel dons this botanical marvel during the "Willow Farm" section of "Supper's Ready." The Old Man — In the song "The Musical Box," the ghost of Henry, a child murdered by his playmate Cynthia in a croquet match, appears as a wizened codger. Brittania — With British flag tights, a regal prow-hat and Poseidon's trident, Gabriel symbolizes the whole of England at the start of "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight." Bat Wings Head — The narrator from "Watcher of the Skies" sports not only the wings but also glowing UV face makeup and a cape. Fox in a Dress — This is acknowledged as the first Gabriel costume, and he apocryphally surprised band mates during the "Foxtrot" tour by coming onstage in a custom-made fox head and wearing one of his wife Jill's red dresses.
