Coast Guard baseball team wins with pair of late runs

New London — Jake Behne's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and helped lead Coast Guard Academy to a 5-3 win over Johnson & Wales in a nonleague baseball game on Monday.

Brendan McNeil of Pawcatuck tacked on a run for the Bears with a leadoff homer in the eighth inning.

Behne had two hits and drove in two runs and Will Stephens, Kyle Jackson and McNeil had two hits each for Coast Guard (8-11).

Walter Harris (1-3) got the win, allowing three hits and two earned runs over eight innings and Brett Sullivan pitched the ninth for his third save. In other games: • Mitchell College won its seventh straight, banging out 17 hits in a 17-1 rout of Becker College in the New England Collegiate Conference. Kyle Hartenstei­n (homer, three RBI) and Garet Griffin (two RBI) each had three hits while Steven Gonzalez (three RBI) and Jack Finnegan (homer, two RBI) chipped in two hits apiece for the Mariners (15-6, 5-1). New London's Eddie Santiago (3-1) pitched six shutout innings, striking out nine and walking one, to earn the victory.

Softball

• Mitchell managed just seven hits and one run in a doublehead­er loss to Lesley University in the NECC. Danielle Autieri's single was Mitchell's only hit in a 4-0 loss in game one. Samantha DelConte tripled and scored on Megan Elphick's single for the Mariners (7-8, 3-3) in a 10-1 defeat in game two.
