NEW RESTAURANT BUILDING PLANNED FOR DOWNTOWN MYSTIC

- — Joe Wojtas

Mystic — A local restaurant owner has plans to construct a new building to house a restaurant, bar and two apartments on an empty lot at 17-19 East Main St.

KAC Realty, whose principal, Angela Kanabis, runs Red 36 on Washington Street and Bravo Bravo on East Main Street, has submitted plans for review to the Stonington Architectural Design Review Board. No application has yet been submitted to the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission.

In 2011, the the commission approved Kanabis’ plan to build a restaurant at 17-19 East Main St., which is directly across East Main Street from Bravo, Bravo, but that project was never built. The empty lot currently provides parking for Bravo, Bravo.

The plans call for a three-story building with a restaurant and bar on the street level and two apartments on the second level. No specifics were offered on the third level. In total, the building would contain 7,481 square feet of space.

Plans also show seasonal dining along the sidewalk, with the restaurant accommodating 87 patrons. The design calls for light oyster-gray clapboards with charcoal trim, with a late 19th century historical design that will fit the character of the downtown, according to the application. The design calls for 24 parking spots, although 29 are needed. Kanabis could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
