That’s a wrap for NFA golfers

Wildcats clinch ECC Div. I title with a victory over Vikings

Old Lyme — Norwich Free Academy wrapped up the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I boys' golf title with a 7-0 win over East Lyme on Thursday.

NFA's Noah Straub was the medalist with a 2-over-par 35 at Old Lyme Country Club. Jack Sullivan (39), Sean Gilot (42), Jack Wood (43) and Miles Joyner (41) also won their matches for the Wildcats (11-3, 5-0), who won the medal point 159-195.

Evan Kluge led East Lyme (7-6, 3-2) with a 42. In other matches: • Wheeler beat St. Bernard 7-0 in an ECC Division III match. Mike Anderson was the medalist with a 1-over-par 37, including a birdie on the par-5 first hole at Stonington Country Club. Nolan Arruda, Kody Lewis, Matt Worobey and Alec Rustici also won matches for Wheeler (7-5, 7-0).

• Stonington's Jack Ognisty was the medalist with a 3-over-par 35 as the Bears beat Bacon Academy 6-1 in an ECC Division II match at Chanticlai­r Golf Course. Jack Glenn (40), Grant Hamilton (52) and Will Cavaliere (51) also won their matches for Stonington (10-2, 5-2).

• Montville won the medal point 169-170 to earn a 5-2 win over Woodstock in an ECC Division II match. Chris Bouchard of Montville was the medalist with a 36. Sam Gaboury and Noah Cook also won matches for Montville (10-5, 3-5).

• Peter Macadam of Old Lyme was the medalist with a 4-over-par 39 as the Wildcats beat North Branford 168-199 in a Shoreline Conference match at Black Hall Club. Graham Aird and Matt McCarthy shot 42s and Will Roberts had a 45 for Old Lyme.

• New London beat Fitch 4-2. Tim Glavan of New London was the medalist with a 45 and A.J. McClain and Evan Bordeau also won matches for the Whalers (3-9, 2-3). Fitch (4-9, 0-5) got a win from Charlie Bresnahan and shared the medal point with a 215.

• Killingly wrapped up at least a share of the ECC Division II title with a 7-0 win over Waterford. Killingly (16-1, 8-0) can earn the title outright with against Stonington on Tuesday. Waterford is 6-6, 1-6.

H.S. baseball

• Wheeler qualified for the CIAC tournament with a 6-1 win over Parish Hill. Chris Munzer (4-3) pitched a seven-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the win. Dylan Wilkinson was 2-for3 with a double and two RBI and Josh Lapid doubled and drove in a run for Wheeler (8-11).

• Trevor Delesderni­er pitched a complete game and chipped in three hits and an RBI to power thirdranke­d East Lyme past Morgan School 6-0. Delesderni­er allowed four hits while walking one and striking out seven for the Vikings (17-2), who also received two hits and an RBI from Jared Hunt.

• Ledyard scored four runs in the second and fifth innings, beating Killingly 8-6. Max Ebdon and Ken Turner had two hits each, James Laconico and Ebdon each drove in two runs and Turner and Laconico each scored twice for Ledyard (118). Jacob Money was the winning pitcher.

• Montville scored four runs in the second inning and four in the seventh on the way to beating Fitch 11-6. Doug DelaCruz had a solo home run and a double while Seamus Barry and Rob DelaCruz each had a single and double for the Indians (10-8). Mike Williams belted a three-run home run while Connor McCrea had an RBI double and Thomas Brown added two hits for Fitch (8-11).

• Winning pitcher Michael Burrows belted a home run and had four RBI in Waterford's 10-1 win over Old Lyme. Burrows struck out 11 and allowed four hits in five innings for the Lancers, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and finished with 12 hits. Alex Petchark had a single, double and four RBI and Matthew Driscoll had two hits and an RBI for Waterford (16-3). Jace Funaro and Griffin Powers had two hits apiece and Jordan Warecke had an RBI single for Old Lyme (14-5).

H.S. boys' tennis

• East Lyme wrapped up an undefeated ECC Division I season with a 7-0 win over New London/Wheeler. Davon Chen, Eric Gu, Matei Coiculescu and Ashish Joshi were straight-set winners in singles for East Lyme (14-0, 8-0), while the doubles teams of Finn Power-Jonathan Tan, Conrad French-Charlie Lyden and Alexander Li-Rajiv Manohar also picked up victories. New London is 4-13, 0-8.

• New London/Wheeler avenged an earlier loss with a 6-1 win over Montville on Wednesday. Zach Skrabacz, Jovahn Brown and Chris Alemania won singles matches for the Whalers along with the doubles teams of Manual Hernandez-Cristofer Ortiz, Joao Tumbaco-Yoel Morel and Rockenson Charles-Kesry Louis. Montville (1-11), which won 6-1 on May 9, got a win at No. 1 singles from Hunter Stepanian.

H.S. girls' tennis

• Montville picked up its first win of the season, beating Norwich Tech 5-2. Luisa Alarcon, Rachel Liang and Linda Chen won singles matches for the Indians (1-14) along with the doubles teams of Man Wei Chan-Jenny Alarcon and Christine Zhu-Layla Wu. Katie Pescatello won her match for Norwich Tech as did Emily Cherwin and Christine White at No. 1 doubles.

• East Lyme beat New London 7-0 in an ECC Division I match. Kelly Peterec, Mary Katherine Taylor, Shauna Kim and Erin Peterec won singles matches in straight sets for the Vikings (7-7, 6-2), earning wins along with the doubles teams of Tanvi Dandekar-Lily Slemp, Neha Ande-Sophia Rogers and Brianna Lally-Kathryn Van Wart.

• Emma Bass went three sets to win her No. 4 singles match and lead Old Lyme past North Branford 5-2 in the Shoreline Conference. Keelin Hurtt and Kellie Sablone also posted singles wins for Old Lyme.

College track

• Coast Guard Academy sophomore Caitlin Piker had her second-best throw of the season as she tossed the javelin 134 feet, 8 inches to place second at the Last Chance Meet hosted by MIT. Her top throw this season (134-11) is currently the 23rd best mark in Division III. The top 22 in the event earn a trip to the NCAA Championsh­ip, but it is possible some athletes above her could decline an invite.

College baseball

• Tim Cate went the distance, pitching a five-hitter while striking out eight and walking four in UConn's 6-0 shutout of East Carolina in American Athletic Conference action at Dunkin Donuts Park in Hartford. Alex LeFevre belted a three-run home run in the third inning and the Huskies (30-22, 13-9) added three more in the sixth in the three-game series opener.
