Saints’ Zuczek earns fourth straight trip to ECC boys’ final

Stonington’s Johnstone is an upset girls’ winner

East Lyme — St. Bernard's Alex Zuczek has earned the opportunit­y to play for his fourth consecutiv­e Eastern Connecticu­t Conference boys' tennis singles championsh­ip.

The top-seeded senior lost only one game in winning two matches Wednesday and will face No. 2 Tyler Huhtanen of Woodstock Academy in today's final at 3 p.m. at East Lyme High School.

East Lyme's top-seeded team of Davon Chen and Eric Gu will face No. 2 Adam Pinch and David Perez of Waterford in the doubles final.

If the matches are postponed (rain is in the forecast), they will be played on Friday at 2 p.m. at either East Lyme of the Old Saybrook Racquet Club.

Zuczek defeated No. 9 William Michelson of Stonington 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfin­als and No. 5 Jacob Stiger of Stonington 6-0, 6-0 in the semis. Huhtanan, meanwhile, ousted No. 26 Sumeet Kadian of East Lyme 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters before rallying for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 3 Eric Wu of East Lyme in the semis.

Chen and Gu lost only three games in winning three matches while Pinch and Perez played just once, beating No. 3 Chris Charette and Trevor Hutchins of Ledyard 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Girls

• Stonington's Charlotte Johnstone, the sixth seed, upset No. 3 seed and 2015 singles champion Michaela Abate of St. Bernard in the quarterfin­als of the ECC tournament at Stonington. Johnstone dropped the first set 1-6 before rallying to win 7-6 (4), 6-1 and advance to the semifinals against No. 2 seed Alaina Moger of Waterford. Moger defeated No. 10 Colleen Keller of East Lyme 6-0, 6-1 in the quarters.

Top-seeded Gabby Dellacono of Stonington, the defending champion, did not lose a game in advancing to the semis, beating Windham's Hannah Brule in the first round and Fitch's Samantha Cote in the quarterfin­als. She will play No. 4 seed Clara Siegmund of Woodstock Academy in the semifinals. Siegmund beat No. 5 Laura Krick of Fitch 6-4, 6-2 in the quarters.

The semifinals will be played will be played today at 3 p.m. at Mystic Indoor Tennis.

In doubles, Stonington's top-seeded team of Hannah Middleton-Krancberg and Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz won both of their matches in straight sets and will face the No. 2 team of Waterford's Stacey Tasoulas and Catherine Yao in the championsh­ip match.

Both singles and doubles finals will be played on Friday at 3 p.m. The two matches are scheduled to be played at Stonington High School, but will be moved to MIT if there is rain.
