Waterford hires Fleming as girls’ basketball coach

Tigers top IronBirds 6-2 in Aberdeen

Waterford — An assistant women's basketball coach at Connecticut College for the past four seasons with vast experience coaching at the high school level, as well, Brian Fleming was named the Waterford High School girls' basketball coach Monday.

Fleming takes over for Mark Capasso, who retired following last season, in which the Lancers were 20-6 overall with an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II title and a berth in the Class M state tournament semifinals.

Prior to Conn, Fleming spent nine seasons as the head girls' basketball coach at Glastonbury, where his teams won 138 games and three consecutive Central Connecticut Conference championships. He also works as a statistical analyst for the Connecticut Sun.

Fleming is a graduate of East Hampton High School, where he is a member of the Bellringers' Athletic Hall of Fame and went on to play basketball at Roger Williams, where he is a member of the 1,000-point club.

"We feel Brian is going to be a great addition to our athletic department. He brings a wealth of basketball knowledge to our competitive girls' program," Waterford athletic director Dave Sousa said in a press release. "We look forward to continued success and growth under coach Fleming's direction."

Tigers top IronBirds

• Hector Martinez hit a three-run single in the sixth inning, leading the Connecticut Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds in a New York-Penn League game before 3,118 fans at Ripken Stadium.

The single by Martinez started the scoring in a six-run inning and gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Garrett McCain drew a bases-loaded walk and Jordan Pearce hit a two-run single. Starter Oswaldo Castillo (3-2) got the win for the Tigers (3231), pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Ruben Garcia (1-2) took the loss in relief for the IronBirds (36-30).

Men's soccer

• Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored in the 94th minute to give UConn a 1-0 sudden death overtime win over Quinnipiac before 4,666 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. Dylan Greenberg assisted for the Huskies (1-1), who held a 15-2 edge in shots, and goalie Scott Levene made one save for the shutout. Quinnipiac is 0-2.
