Conn welcomes three new coaches
New London — Connecticut College athletic director Fran Shields announced the hiring of five new additions to its athletic department, including three head coaches.
Lucas Maher has been named men's cross country coach, Michael MacDonald men's and women's squash coach, and Lisa Vogeley women's lacrosse coach.
"Our new head coaches bring deep and diverse experiences to our programs that translate well to the challenges of competing in the NESCAC," Shields said in a release. "Our student-athletes will benefit greatly from the enthusiasm and energy they bring to the table."
In addition, Matthew Chmura was named sports information director and Bridget Ward was named assistant athletic trainer.
Maher, a 2013 graduate of Tufts, was an assistant coach at Amherst for three seasons before spending the 2016 season as the interim head coach.
MacDonald arrives at Conn from Chicago, where he served as a teaching professional at the University Club and East Bay clubs as well as head coach at Beacon Academy. He played collegiately at Denison University.
Vogeley spent the past four seasons as head coach at Roger Williams University, where she led the Hawks to a 27-5 record, four straight Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament title games, and the school's first first CCC championship and NCAA Division III tournament bid in 2016. She played at Division I St. Mary's College in northern California.
Tigers washed out
• Steady rain in the Baltimore area led the the postponement of Tuesday night's New York-Penn League game between the Connecticut Tigers and Aberdeen Ironbirds. The game will be made up as part of doubleheader on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be seven innings. The Tigers (32-31), making a late run at a possible playoff berth, will also play a doubleheader on Thursday night at Staten Island.
