CGA’s Mooney captures top spot at Conn Invite

Waterford — Coast Guard Academy's Kaitlyn Mooney won individual honors during the Connecticu­t College Invitation­al women's cross country race at Harkness State Park on Saturday.

Mooney continued her impressive freshman season by overcoming wet conditions on the 6K course to win in 21 minutes, 35 seconds, 20 seconds faster than runnerup Brittany Bowman of Tufts. She also helped the Bears place eighth in the team standings with 214 points (Middebury won with 36).

Coast Guard's top five scorers all finishing among the top 100 as Anita Green finished 36th (23:42), Rachel Burchill 53rd (24:06), Nina Ragle 87th (24:40.1) and Kirsten Carson 88th (24:40.3).

Host Conn finished 10th with 240 points and was led by freshman Meredith Cronin, who placed 33rd overall in 23:40. In addition, Eva Brydsonwas 50th (24:00) and Grace Sheeran was 55th (24:08).

Men's cross country

• Conn College, placing two runners in the top five, finished third in its own invite at Harkness State Park. Scott Mason was second in 24:55 and Danny Aschale was fifth in 25:13. Grant O'Connor of RPI won the race in 24:32. RPI won with 55 points, Middlebury was second with 77, Conn had 124 and Coast Guard finished 12th.

Also scoring for Conn were Price Day (20th, 26:04), Connor Trapp (38th, 26:28) and Russell Adam (79th, 27:07). Coast Guard was led by Andre Gallant, who placed 59th at 26:50. Other top finishers for the Bears were Colton Atkinson (84th, 27:13) and Jacob Panning (92nd, 27:21).

Volleyball

• Conn College swept Colby 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 in a the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Sam Hunter and Emma Hewlin had 11 kills each, Grace McGee had 35 assists and Maddie Rust had seven kills for Conn (11-7, 2-6).

• Mitchell College won its first match of the season with a 25-21, 24-19, 24-26, 17-25 and 15-12 win over Dean in the New England Collegiate Conference. Marissa Sweeney led the Mariners (1-14, 1-2) with 13 kills and 18 digs while Italia Krick added 10 kills and Lauren Tompkins had 39 assists and 17 digs.

• Coast Guard finished 2-2 at the Ducks Classic hosted by Stevens. Coast Guard beat FDU-Florham 3-2 and lost to Stockton 3-2 after beating Montclair State 3-1 and losing to Stevens 3-0 on Friday. CGA senior Michelle McGill had 34 digs on Saturday to move into third place in program history with 1,483. Makenna Martin had 103 assists in the tourney for the Bears (14-9).

Women's soccer

• No. 13 MIT beat Coast Guard 2-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Waterford's Claire Hurley scored for Coast Guard, her fifth goal of the season and fourth of the week. Kali Borden had an assist and Rachel Boohar made eight saves for Coast Guard (7-7, 3-4).

• Mitchell played Newbury to a 2-2 tie in the NECC. Lindsey Fairbank scored both goals for Mitchell. Hannah Corrigan had an assist and Jordan Lohneiss made six saves for Mitchell (1-8-1, 0-4-1).

Men's soccer

• Waterford's Khaliyl Holland scored twice as Mitchell beat Becker 6-1 in the NECC. New London's Brayan Mora, Salem's Nicholas Ghirardi, Norwich's David Hernandez and Waterford's Eduardo Tineo scored goals, Christian Urena, Jose Sierra, New London's Wadlet Jean-Baptiste and Norwich's Santiago Manrique had assists and Jose Romero (five) and Preston's Seth Strader combined for eight saves for Mitchell (4-7-1, 3-1).

• Brendan Nemes' second goal of the game came with 56 seconds left in the first overtime period as WPI beat Coast guard 2-1 in the NEWMAC. Austin Read gave Coast Guard the lead 6:29 into the match. Patrick Palermo had an assist for Coast Guard (8-4-1, 3-2).

• UConn took sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference with a 2-0 win over South Florida on Friday night. Josh Burnett and Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored and Scott Levene made four saves for the Huskies (7-3-2, 4-0).

Field hockey

• No. 1 UConn won its 22nd straight regular-season game, beating Liberty 3-0 in the Big East. Charlotte Veitner, Margot van Hecking Colenbrand­er and Jessica Dembrowski for UConn (14-0, 5-0).
