PART OF BROADWAY IN NORWICH CLOSED SATURDAY

- — Claire Bessette

Norwich — The one-way portion of Broadway just north of City Hall will be closed most of the day Saturday to accommodate sewer work to replace a 90-foot section of sewer pipe, Norwich Public Utilities officials said.

NPU has identified a damaged section of the pipe that requires immediate action, NPU spokesman Chris Riley said. The work will take place from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“Undertaking this work in a scheduled, controlled manner is far safer and cost-effective than responding to an emergency or following the collapsing of the road,” NPU officials said in a press release Thursday. “Completing this work on Saturday also mitigates the impact on school bus traffic, local businesses and City Hall.”

NPU is working with the Norwich Police Department to divert traffic away from this area and to minimize any public safety issues. Detour signs will be posted and flaggers will be on site to assist motorists.

Traffic headed north on Broadway will be diverted right onto Willow Street, left onto Franklin Street, then onto McKinley Avenue.

The sewer pipe has been damaged and has created a condition that could result in the roadway collapsing.

The sewer infrastructure beneath Broadway is a combined system, carrying both residential sewage and storm water run-off.
