Kirvelevic­ius, Whalen win titles at URI Invite

Kingston, R.I, — East Lyme High School's Rasa Kirvelevic­ius won the girls' 3,200-meter event at the URI Rhody Classic Track & Field Invitation­al on Saturday in 12 minutes, 31.61 seconds and Stonington's Cam Whalen finished first in the boys' 300 in 36.82 seconds.

Stonington also finished first in the girls' 4x800 relay with the team of Elizabeth Gray, Jessica Detwiler, Lindsey Orr and Emma Small running a 10:17.9. East Lyme's team of Sophie Taylor, Gillian Goodwin, Julia Bates and Claire Mason was second in the 4x800 in 10:24.8.

East Lyme's Dylan Hatajik was second in the boys' 55 dash in 6.69 seconds and third in the 300 in 37.16, while teammate Ryan McCauley was second in the 600 (1:24.89). Stonington's Whalen was second in the 55 hurdles (7.97) and Rhys Hammond was third for the Bears in the 1,000 (2:37.74). Ledyard's Zak King was second in the 3,200 (10:09.75) and third in the 1,600 (4:31.72) and Collin Wiltshire added a second-place finish in the triple jump for the Colonels, setting a school record with a leap of 42 feet, 7.5 inches. Stonington's 4x200 relay team of Josh Curtin, Nick Benjamin, Whalen and Joey Hinckley was second in 1:37.36 and the Bears' 4x800 relay team of Steve Devoe, Chase Flynn, Blake Edwards and Hammond was also second (8:49.97).

Other top local boys' finishers were Stonington's Hayden Parrilla, fourth in the long jump (19-10), and Wade Post, fifth in the long jump (19-10); Fitch's Adrian Atad, sixth in the shot put (44-4); and East Lyme's Chris Abbey, sixth in the 1,600 (4:47.68). Fitch's 4x400 relay team was fifth (3:51.06).

Other top local girls' finishers were Fitch's Madison Powe, third in the 55 dash (7.69); Stonington's Lindsey Orr, third in the 1,000 (3:18.71); East Lyme's Saige Deveau, fourth in the 55 (7.78), Mason, fourth in the 600 (1:43.29), Taylor, fourth in the 1,000 (3:19.89) and Jamie Foster fourth in the shot put (34-2). Ledyard placed three runners in the 3,200 with Averie Greeley third (12:56.67), Katelyn English fourth (13:02.86) and Jade Dessaint sixth (13:25.75). Fitch's 4x200 relay team was third (1:53.92) and Stonington placed third in the 4x400 (4:35.21) and sixth in the 4x200 (1:56.77). East Lyme was fourth in the 4x400 (4:35.21).

Wrestling

• Montville's Noah Caskey was voted the Most Oustanding Wrestler as the Indians finished second at the Fairfield Warde Invitation­al. Montville scored 166, behind Warde's 189. Caskey won the title at 132 and teammates Sam Kury (152) amd Dane Concascia (182) also won titles. Nick Tibbetts (220) was second, Ian Anderson (145) and Darrick Deveau (285) took thirds and Caleb Forehand (170) was fourth.

• Jacob Commander won the 195-pound championsh­ip as New London placed third at the Chad Antoch Invite in Westerly. Chariho won the meet with 202.5 points and New London scored 134.5. Xavier Alvarez (182) and Luis Rodriguez-Veras (170) both had second-place finishes for the Whalers and Naaje Powell-Keaton was third at 106.

• Norwich Free Academy's Doug Moore (182) was 4-0 with four pins as the Wildcats finished second at the Killingly Duals. NFA (8-7) beat New Britain 40-33, East Catholic 51-30 and the JV All-Stars 69-6 before losing to Killingly 53-17. Theran Vanase (152) was also 4-0 and Dominic Renfree (120), Jacob Foster (126), Mason McMahan (170) and Marc Thelusma (195) won three matches each. Renfree, Foster and McMahan had two pins each.

• Waterford went 2-2 at the East Haven Duals, beating Newtown 4624 and St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 60-15 while losing to Platt 50-27 and East Haven 38-35. Logan Smith (106), Eric Zane (120), Jackson Harshberge­r (152) and Luther Wade (160) each went 4-0 with A.J. Sachatello (132) and Harshberge­r each getting three pins.

Swimming

• East Lyme lost to Brookfield in a nonleague meet, 98.5-84.5. Jack Mucciarone, Jack Zhang and Eain Goolsbey won events for East Lyme (1-2) and the three teamed up with Anthony Powall Wang to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Boys' fencing

• Eric Banach led Ledyard to a pair of 6-3 wins in epee, beating NFA and Griswold. Banach went 5-1 with a plus-14 in touches, while giving up 12. NFA beat Griswold 6-3. In foil, NFA beat Ledyard 5-3 and Griswold 9-0 and Ledyard beat Griswold 7-2. Ledyard's Cameron James was a plus-23.

Girls' fencing

• NFA swept a tri-meet in foil, beating Ledyard 8-1 and Griswold 9-0. Caroline Mercier and Maura Sanchi each went 6-0 for NFA and Mercier had a plus-26. Ledyard beat Griswold 7-2. In epee, NFA beat Ledyard 6-3.
