Edsall hires Dunn as UConn's offensive coordinator

UConn football coach Randy Edsall is bringing in a former member of his Maryland staff to serve as offensive coordinator.

John Dunn, who spent five seasons as Maryland's tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator, signed a two-year contract worth $300,000 per year, UConn announced on Friday. He also will be the quarterback coach.

Dunn replaces Rhett Lashlee who recently left to become Southern Methodist's offensive coordinator after guiding the UConn attack to a significant improvement in his one season in Storrs.

"Having John join our staff as offensive coordinator/quarterback coach will enhance our staff tremendously, as he has a wealth of knowledge in different schemes and has learned and coached under some of the best offensive minds in the game," Edsall said in a released statement.

"... His philosophy of being a multiple, no huddle offense that attacks using multiple tempos, personnel groupings and formations defines our vision offensively."

Edsall added that Dunn is a proven recruiter and evaluator.

Most recently, Dunn worked the last two seasons with the Chicago Bears, serving as an offensive assistant in 2017 under head coach John Fox.

"John is as good an offensive mind as I've been around," Fox said. "He has a great feel for the run game as well as pass game. He has the ability to relate to and motivate players and is an outstanding coach with a bright future!"

Dunn's resume also includes a stop at LSU where he was a graduate offensive assistant for three seasons. As a player, he walked on to the North Carolina program and played quarterback and tight end until his career was cut short by a neck injury. He also was an offensive graduate assistant for the Tar Heels from 2006-07.
