Nancy Rees

Stonington — Nancy Thomas Rees, 90, of Washington. D.C., later of New York, N.Y., Watch Hill, R.I., and Stonington, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018.

She was the wife of the late Charles H.G. Rees; mother of four daughters, Liberty T. Rees, Camilla R.G. Rees, Nancy Rees Wall and Hilleary Rees Coleman; mother-in-law of Thomas R. Wall IV and James P. Coleman; and grandmother of Gretel C. Coleman, Kelsey Rees Wall, Thomas R. (T.R.) Wall V, Emily T. R. Coleman and Natalie C. Wall.

“Tomo” was the eldest child of patent attorney Francis DeLashmutt Thomas, Partner of Bacon & Thomas in Washington, D.C. and May Walsh Reilly Thomas. She grew up in Washington, D.C. as well as in Warrenton, Va. on her family’s farm. She attended Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, The Potomac School, and after graduating from Foxcroft School, she attended Vassar College and Université de Genève before graduating from George Washington University. She studied decorative painting with the American folk-artist, Peter Hunt, served as editor for several years of Foxcroft School’s Alumni Magazine, “Gone Away” and was an avid reader and follower of the arts and culture while raising her four girls.

She was predeceased by her husband; and by three younger brothers, Francis D. “Tommy” Thomas Jr., Hugh Reilly Thomas and Stephen Larned Thomas.

Nancy enjoyed her memberships at The Misquamicut Club, The Watch Hill Yacht Club, The Wadawanuck Club, The Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and The Colony Club. As a member of The Colonial Dames of America, she was a proud descendant of Roger Williams and Colonel Ninian Beall. Throughout her life she was known for her kindness, wisdom, genuine interest in other people and gracious hospitality.

Donations may be made in her memory to Foxcroft School or the Westerly Hospital.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 27, 2018, at St. Thomas More in New York City. There will be a celebration of her life in Watch Hill, R.I., this summer.
