Gretchen Korpi
Mystic — Gretchen (Gilmore) Korpi, 84, of Mystic, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, at Mystic Healthcare.
Born Oct. 8, 1933, in the family home on Willow Point in West Mystic, Gretchen was the daughter of the late James and Dorothy (Maxson) Gilmore. She married Wesley E. Korpi, on Oct. 31, 1969, in Biloxi, Miss. He predeceased her in 2010.
She is survived by her only child, Katie Korpi and her husband, Duncan Denny; and two grandchildren, Maxson and Marielle Denny, all of Mystic. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Her sister, Joan (Gilmore) Patterson, predeceased her in 1975.
Mrs. Korpi was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife and daughter. Prior to marriage, she was employed in administrative positions at the Mystic Seaport and the Connecticut Department of Labor. She attended Mystic Academy and Robert E. Fitch Senior High School and graduated from The Ellis School in Pittsburgh in 1951.
A graveside service to pay respect to Gretchen’s honorable life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2018, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Mystic River Ambulance Association or Mystic Congregational Church’s Missions Committee.
Gretchen’s family wishes to extend special thanks to the resident care team at Mystic Healthcare as well as Academy Point at Mystic, for their compassion and care. They are also especially grateful to Mystic’s Integrated Emergency Response Team and the numerous therapists and aides who provided assistance and encouragement to Gretchen over the past several years.
