No. 15 East Lyme girls upset No. 2 Holy Cross in Class L basketball tourney
Waterbury — A young East Lyme girls' basketball team expected big things from themselves this season as they returned all but one starter, but injuries kept getting in the way.
The Vikings are finally healthy. And dangerous.
Junior Megan Bauman had 18 points and eight assists as 15th-seeded East Lyme upset No. 2 Holy Cross 48-41 on Saturday night in a CIAC Class L second-round game.
The Vikings ended the first half with a 9-0 run to tie Holy Cross at 20. They went ahead 35-29 after three quarters.
"We've had substantial injuries all year," East Lyme head coach Sal Fiorillo said. "In our 22 games that we've played, (Saturday) was the first time we had all of our players healthy. To go up there and win against a quality program, this is a signature win. I'm just really proud of the way we competed tonight."
The Vikings (15-8) will play at No. 10 Wethersfield in Thursday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. The Eagles beat No. 7 Pomperaug 62-46 on Saturday.
Sophomore Sophie Dubreuil had 14 points and six assists and classmate Nadia Tarhini had six points and seven rebounds for the Vikings.
"Sophie Dubreuil ... she had probably the worst ankle sprain I've seen in 30 years of coaching," Fiorillo said. "She's got more heart than probably any kid I've had in coaching in 30 years. I'm just so proud of the way she competed tonight. I don't know if she was quote 100 percent."
Aiyana Ward scored 18 for the Crusaders (20-4). In other games: • Sixth-seeded Sacred Heart of Waterbury downed No. 11 Old Lyme, 3820, in a Class S second-round game. The Hearts (20-5) are the Naugatuck Valley League champions. Britney DeRoehn scored six for the Wildcats (16-8).
Indoor track
• Stonington's Cam Whelan set a school record en route to a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles during the New England indoor track and field championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Whelan finished in 7.66 seconds to finish behind Billy Powers of Winnacunnet (N.H.), who won the race in 7.40 seconds. East Lyme's Dylan Hatajik was the only other local place-winner, finishing eighth in the 55 dash in 6.58 seconds.
Gymnastics
• NFA's Anna Cirello was the top local finisher in the State Open allaround competition at Pomperaug, placing 25th with 31.275 points. She also finished 23rd in the floor exercise with 8.525 points. In other events, Old Lyme's Britney Detuzzi was 14th on the balance beam (8.475), Fitch's Lindsey Denman tied for 17th on bars (8.4) and NFA's Ariana Cohen and Stonington's Catherine Cassata tied for 23rd on vault (8.65).
Eastern Connecticut Conference champion Woodstock Academy had its six-year reign as team champion ended by Greenwich, which won the meet with 143.525. Woodstock was second with 138.425.
Cheerleading
• The Connecticut High School cheerleading championship, which were postponed on Friday and Saturday due to a roof issue at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, will be held on Sunday with two different sessions. The Class L and M championships will be held at 9 a.m., and the Class LL S and co-ed championships will begin at 2:30 p.m.
