Avery Point women advance to Region 21 basketball final

Boston — UConn Avery Point advanced to the championsh­ip game of the NJCAA Region 21 women's basketball tournament on Saturday with an 89-45 victory over fourth-seeded Springfiel­d Tech in a semifinal game at Bunker Hill Community College.

The top-seeded Pointers (22-6) will play defending champion Roxbury Community College in Sunday's final, also at Bunker Hill, at noon. No. 2 Roxbury defeated No. 3 Massasoit CC 81-66 in the other semifinal game.

Tatyana LaFrance Boyce led the Pointers with 27 points, 11 rebounds and six steals while Taleeha Green added 11 points and 12 rebounds, Edona Thaqi scored 17 points, Mia Brennan 13, Hanna LeBeau 12 and Meagan Bianchi had 11 assists.

Women's hockey

• Second-seeded Connecticu­t College lost to No. 3 Amherst 3-1 in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament at Middlebury. The Mammoths play top-seeded Middlebury in Sunday's final with the winner earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament. Conn finishes 15-6-5, matching the school record for wins for the third straight season. The Camels scored on a power play goal by Lauren Helm in the second period.

Men's lacrosse

• Riley McNulty, Anthony Wyler, Benner Guertsen and Ian Logan scored three goals apiece as Coast Guard Academy routed Norwich University 17-1 in a non-conference game. Will Iorio added two assists and Colin Cashin seven ground balls for the Bears (2-0), who held a 61-21 edge in shots. Coast Guard host Wesleyan, the top-ranked Division III team in the nation, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

• Sophomores Sean Smith and Jack Rutter scored two goals each as Conn College beat Bowdoin 8-6 in a NESCAC match which was the season opener for both teams. Ben Parens won 10 faceoffs and had five groundball­s and Jameson Hill made 15 saves for Conn.

Women's lacrosse

• Freshman Brenna Farrington set a program single-game record with eight goals as Coast Guard outlasted St. Joseph's (N.Y.) 22-16. Farrington scored six goals in the second half as the Bears (3-0) outscored the Golden Eagles 13-8 in the second half. Senior Daria McKenna of Fitch added three goals and five assists, matching Farrington's program record for points in a single game set by Kaitlin Dickson in 2016, while freshman Mary Goins added three goals and classmate Haley Howard had one goal and four assists.

• Conn College lost to No. 23 Bowdoin 23-6 in a NESCAC match which was the season opener for both teams. Jamie Navoni scored four goals and won six draws for Conn.

Men's indoor track

• Conn College junior Scott Mason finished third in the 3,000-meter race (8:22.73) at the Tufts Last Chance qualifying meet in Medford, Mass. Mason and Danny Aschale (5,000) are expected to earn berths into the NCAA Division III Championsh­ips next weekend in Birmingham, Ala. Mason is currently ranked eighth in the 3,000 and Aschale is ranked No. 14 in the 5,000.

• Coast Guard's Michael Frick was second in the pole vault at Tufts, clearing 15-3.5 on his third attempt.

Women's indoor track

• Conn College sophomore broke a school record in the shot put during the Tufts Last Chance qualifying meet in Medford, Mass. Mensah finished second overall and her throw of 43 feet, 8.25 inches broke the old record of 42-8.25 set by Lauren Kennedy last year.

• Coast Guard's distance medley relay team finished third at Tufts. The team of Anita Green, Anna Beck, Ashlee Johnson and Kaitlyn Mooney ran an 11:53.45, the ninth fastest time in Division III this season. The team is expected to earn a berth in next weekend's NCAA Division III Championsh­ips. Teammate Adora Lawrence was fifth in the 800 in 2:17.16, the second fastest time in program history.

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard opened its spring season with a 5-4 win over Vassar, giving new coach Jordan Smith his first win. Freshman Kyle Fager's 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles gave the Bears the win. Tom Hackett and Mike Melampy won their singles matches for Coast Guard along with the doubles teams of Fager-Chris Lansing and Melampy-Jack Phillips.
