Coast Guard men hand N.Y. Maritime first lacrosse loss
New York — Riley McNulty had three goals and four assists as Coast Guard Academy outlasted New York Maritime 12-8 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Thursday night.
The Bears (5-1) hand the Privateers (5-1) their first loss of the season.
Matt Huemme added two goals and an assist for Coast Guard while Benner Guertsen had a goal and two assists and Matty Johnson had one goal and one assist.
The Bears never trailed, scoring the game's first two goals, extending the lead to 7-3 at halftime and leading by as many as six, 11-5, in the second half.
The Bears held a 37-22 shots edge with goalie Trey Johnson making 14 saves and Colin Cashin winning 14 of 18 faceoffs and collecting a team-high eight ground balls. In another game: • Freshman Jack Dalton scored both goals in Mitchell College's 21-2 non-conference loss to Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. The Mariners are 0-5.
Sun sign January
• The Connecticut Sun have signed guard Jessica January to a training camp contract. The 5-foot-7 January was selected in the third round (No. 28 overall) by the Sun in the 2017 WNBA Draft, but was waived on May 12.
The former DePaul star is currently playing for CSU Universitatea Alba Iulia in Romania, averaging 16.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
College swimming
• Coast Guard Academy's men's 400 medley relay team had the best showing during Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Championships in Indianapolis. The team of junior Patrick Jackson, junior Chasse Sodemann, senior Ross Garrett and sophomore Joe Rodriguez placed 20th in 3:24.27. That same group also swam in the 200 free relay and placed 22nd (1:24.57). In addition, Jackson was 30th in the 100 butterfly (49.97) and junior Taylor Rowe was 46th in the 200 free (1:43.50).
• The Coast Guard women swam in their first event of the championship as the 200 free relay of freshman Sarah Passilla, junior Kristen Young, junior Christina McCulla and freshman Emily Benson placed 29th (1:38.57).
VerSteeg honored
• Norwich Free Academy's Russ VerSteeg was named the 2018 Connecticut High School Coaches' Association Assistant Indoor Track Coach of the Year at the all-state banquet earlier this month at the Aqua Turf Club. VerSteeg has coached the pole vault at NFA from 2003 to the present.
This season, accomplishments by the Wildcats pole vaulters included Chris Weir winning the boys' Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I championship (13 feet, 6 inches) and finishing second in Class LL and fourth in the State Open. Weir set NFA's indoor school record with a personal best leap of 14-1.
Paige Martin won the girls' ECC title at 10-6 and was third in Class LL and fourth at the State Open, while setting a personal record of 11-0. Madison Martin was second in the ECC, fourth in Class LL and eighth in the Open. The NFA girls placed first through fifth at the ECC meet, with all five qualifying for the Class LL championship.
VerSteeg has coached 18 state class meet champions at East Lyme and NFA, both indoors and outdoors, and eight State Open champions. He has had 10 athletes earn All-New England status. He is a professor at the New England School of Law in Boston.
