Kersten pitches UConn past Boston College, 4-0

Earns Penders his 500th win as Huskies coach

Brighton, Mass. — Jeff Kersten allowed two hits over 8.2 innings as UConn beat Boston College 4-0 in a nonleague baseball game on Tuesday, giving Huskies coach Jim Penders his 500th win.

Kersten (1-1), who struck out two and walked two, retired 15 straight until a one-out walk in the ninth. P.J. Poulin came on for a oneout save after Kersten's second walk. Anthony Prato singled, scored and drove in a run for UConn (12-9) and Zac Susi had two hits and a run. Former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski singled and stole a base for UConn.

Penders, in his 15th season, has a career record of 500-354-4. In other games: • Emerson's Jack Fox took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before finishing with a two-hitter in a 7-1 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Luke Thompson broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single and, one out later, Will Stephens doubled him home.

Freshman PJ Gravalec (1-1) took the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs over six innings. Gravalec struck out seven and walked two for the Bears (6-5, 0-3).

Women's lacrosse

• Sophomore Julia Loesch scored five goals, leading Connecticu­t College to an 18-8 win over Eastern Connecticu­t State in a nonleague game. Freshman Hannah Lombard had three goals and two assists and Megan Mullin made six saves for Conn (3-5). Tristan Kijak, Katie Burke and Maggie Boddington had two goals each for ECSU (1-5).

• Freshman Brenna Farrington scored five goals as Coast Guard beat Elms 17-0 in a nonleague game. Senior captain Darfia McKenna of Mystic, the former Fitch standout, had three goals and an assist and Carter Sanderson and Erin Mullen had three goals each for the Bears (7-1).

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard won all six singles matches and beat Merchant Marine 8-1 to pick up another point in the Superinten­dent's Trophy standings. Coast Guard now leads the competitio­n with Merchant Marine 7.5-3.5 with just four events left this year.

Tom Hackett, Arthur Wicke, Adam Bahney and Jack Phillips all won in straight sets for the Bears (3-0) while John Hu and Mike Melampy won in three sets. Melampy and Phillips and Chris Lansing and Wicke teamed up for wins in doubles.
