SEWER MAIN BREAK SHUTS DOWN POR­TION OF TIL­LEY AT BANK STREET IN NEW LON­DON

New Lon­don — A con­trac­tor per­form­ing cross­walk work on Bank Street struck and dam­aged a sewer main pipe on Wednesday, re­sult­ing in road clo­sures and de­tours un­til the re­pair work is com­pleted.

Roads are ex­pected to re­open on Saturday af­ter­noon.

The sewer pipe break oc­curred at the in­ter­sec­tion of Bank and Til­ley streets, near the fire sta­tion. Elec­tric Boat was no­ti­fied, bar­ri­cades in­stalled and lights at Bank Street, Til­ley Street and Spar Yard will re­main yel­low to al­le­vi­ate any con­ges­tion.

Po­lice also are ex­pected to be as­signed to the area to as­sist mo­torists.

Ve­o­lia Wa­ter is work­ing with other con­trac­tors on re­pairs. There will be no ac­cess to Til­ley Street from Bank Street dur­ing the re­pairs. In­stead, mo­torists should use Blin­man to get to Til­ley.

Bank Street at Spar Yard will turn into a sin­gle lane for the re­main­ing length of Bank Street to State Street. De­tour signs have been placed at Bank and Howard streets.

Green Street to Til­ley Street still is open in both di­rec­tions.

A rep­re­sen­ta­tive from Ve­o­lia Wa­ter, the city’s wa­ter util­ity, was not im­me­di­ately avail­able to com­ment on the pro­jected cost of the re­pairs. Colonna Con­crete and As­phalt was in­stalling con­crete cross­walks at the time of the sewer pipe break.
