Southport, N.C. — Stanley R. Stober, 73, of Southport and formerly of Gales Ferry, died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018. After a courageous battle with cancer, he died peacefully surrounded by his family.

Stan was the beloved husband of Mary (Orkney) Stober for 52 years. Stan and Mary were blessed with a large and loving family.

In addition to his wife, Stan is survived by his children, Matthew (Michelle), Andrew (Marnie) and Gretchen (Dennis) Moen; as well as his grandchildren, David Foster, Alex Beilinson, Nicole Stober, Matthew Stober Jr., Callie Stober, Luke Stober, Bridget Stober and Collin Moen; and his great-grandchildren, Gavin, Harper and Levi Foster.

In the wise words of Will Rogers, “His heritage to his children wasn’t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father.”

Born in Midland, Mich., Stan was the son of the late Kenneth and Rena Stober. Stan is also survived by his siblings, Van Stober, Janet Van Blerkom, Cheryl Wadsworth and Berne Stober.

A graduate of Norwich Free Academy in 1964, he earned a degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University in 1968 and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1984. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a train engineer. He swapped trains for pharmaceuticals and was committed to Pfizer for his entire 32-year career.

Stan loved the water. Living on the Thames River for nearly 50 years, he enjoyed boating, gardening, lobster dinners, his golden retriever lap dogs and sunsets…so many breathtaking sunsets. And he was an avid golfer, earning three holes-in-one on the beautiful courses of St. James in his hometown of Southport. When Mary could tear him away from golf, he loved time at Smith Mountain Lake with dear friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 6, at the St. James Chapel in Southport, N.C. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stan’s memory to the Southport/Oak Island Food Pantry, P.O. Box 711, Oak Island, NC 28465.
