East Lyme — William M. “Capt. Bill” Barnard, 91, of Niantic, beloved husband of Beverly (Manion) Barnard, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Born in Hartford to the late George and Irene (Nichols) Barnard, he was raised in Hartford and served his country proudly with the U.S. Army during and after World War II. He lived and worked in Bloomfield for many years where he served as an officer with the Blue Hills Fire Department. Bill settled in Niantic in 1973. He was a member of the American Legion and served as a past commander of the Niantic American Legion Post No. 128. He retired in 1992 from the Hartford Courant.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the Niantic waters. He was a BIG devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and UConn Huskies women’s basketball team.

In addition to his wife, Beverly, of Niantic, he is survived by his children, Bruce Barnard and his wife, Patricia, of Windsor, Christine Castaldi of Oregon City, Ore., Carl Barnard of Hollywood, Fla. and Peter Barnard and his wife, Susan, of Niantic; his grandchild­ren, Eric, Jesse, Katie, Joshua, Tyler, Jamie and Shannen; and seven great-grandchild­ren.

Besides his parents, he was predecease­d by his infant daughter; his sisters, Sylvia Barnard and Barbara Tobin; and his brother, Robert Barnard.

His family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Burial will be private.
