ONLINE FEEDBACK
Here is what readers of theday.com had to say about the Oct. 1 article concerning an East Lyme family who are at odds with their homeowners’ association in The Orchards development over their planting of several ornamental trees.
“I would never live in a house with a homeowners association because they have too much control. I’m surprised these people didn’t read the regulations before purchasing the house.” — Barbara Birmingham
“East Lyme is described best by when Mark Twain said; ‘Hain’t we got all the fools in town on our side? And hain’t that a big enough majority in any town?’ From ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.’” — Ed Chiburis
“In my opinion, trees can do no wrong and can never be wrong. I think the association should find a way to allow the trees to stay. Not to mention, with all the fruit trees that were listed, I think what they have on their property goes right along with the ‘Orchard’ theme.” — Teneka Spencer-Wileya
“Probably you should have stuck with living in New London, a diverse and inclusive community that is not so full of itself. Up here, bordering the arboretum, we can have just about any tree we want … I have 100-foot pines, so we are not the first to plant for the future. This former farmland had russet apple, pear, cherry, blueberry bushes and grapes. We have replaced and added many trees, without benefit of a ‘homeowners’ association. Always prize your freedom.” — Clark van der Lyke
“Homeowners associations don’t steal your freedom. They limit your freedom with your consent. Don’t want one, do not buy in one. Simple. No hate or complaining needed.” — Carol Casey
“I’m not a big fan of Associations, but do own a house in one. When you buy, you must understand that there are rules and accommodations to your actions/behavior may have to be made. This rule was a bit vague, and that is part of the problem. Had it mentioned tree planting in its examples the couple would clearly be in the wrong.” — Scott Matsona
