Stonington’s Tucchio earns 200th coaching victory

Bears earn a solid field hockey win over Avon

Stonington — Miranda Arruda scored twice as the Stonington field hockey team beat Avon 3-0 on Saturday, giving Bears coach Jenna Tucchio her 200th career win.

Arruda's goals gave Stonington (111-1) a 2-0 halftime lead and with 8:29 left in the second half Keegan Donahue scored off an assist from Casey Boumenot. Avon (8-2) outshot the Bears 9-6.

Tucchio, in her 15th season, is 20048-19 and led the Bears to a Class S state title in 2013. She credited the defense led by Sarah Flakus, Colette Dreher and Jillian Holland along with goalie Abby Mann (seven saves) for blanking a strong Avon team.

Avon had six penalties corners and Holland broke up four of them.

Girls' soccer

• Kaleigh Bolduc, assisted by Megan Detwiler, scored in 19th minute to give Stonington a 1-0 victory over Waterford. Goalie Tori LoPresto stopped three shots to earn the shutout for the Bears (10-4-1), who held a 14-7 edge in shots, while Mya Rheaume made seven saves for the Lancers (5-8-1).

• Old Lyme battled East Hampton to a 1-1 tie in the Shoreline Conference. Britney DeRoehn scored for the Wildcats (7-3-4, 5-2-3) off an assist from Mya Johnson and goalie Sam Gray made two saves.

Boys' soccer

• Waterford erupted for three goals in the second half to defeat New London 4-0 in the annual Sweeney-Lessig Cup at New London. It was the seventh straight year the Lancers (5-9-1) have won the Cup, which was establishe­d in 1970. After James Gregg converted a penalty kick in the first half for Waterford, Harrison Searle scored on PK in the second half followed by goals from Avery Albanese and Nicolas Santangelo (Jeremy Gibbs assisted). Giuseppe Conte made 16 saves in goal for the Whalers (2-13).

• Zach Dunnack scored as Lyman Memorial beat Old Lyme in a nonleague game, 1-0. Lyman Memorial (13-1-2) outshot Old Lyme 11-2. Ryan Tetreault made eight saves for Old Lyme (3-12-1).

Volleyball

• Olivia Carney had 24 assists as Fitch avenged a five-game loss to NFA earlier in the season with a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats in ECC Division I play. Game scores were 25-20, 27-25 and 25-23. Nora Ryan added 12 kills for the Falcons (9-7, 1-5) while Ciarra Jimenez had eight kills and Aby Hagley finished with 10 digs. Sarah Ericson had eight kills and 12 digs for NFA (7-9, 1-5) and Eliana Jewell added six assists and seven kills.
