Norwich — Elizabeth (Liepold) Hansen died Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, from complicati­ons after hiatal hernia surgery. He son was by her side.

She was born in Norwich, on Valentine’s Day 1923, to Louise Dearing and George C. Liepold. She married the late Harold W. Hansen Sr., on Nov. 22, 1952, at the Lutheran Church in Norwich.

After graduating from the Norwich Free Academy and forgoing college, she worked briefly at the Greenville Grain Company. In 1942, she began work at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton in the same supply department building as her beloved Aunt Marie had worked as a yeoman in World War I. Betty met many of her lifelong friends while working at the base.

After marriage, Elizabeth stayed home to raise her children, stepson Harold Jr., Karl and Eric, who survive her. She is also survived by her brother, Warren Liepold of Pawcatuck; and many generation­s of beloved nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was predecease­d by her infant son, Geoffrey, on Nov. 19, 1953; her husband, Harold; and her sister, Ruth Rankin.

She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church of East Lyme.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Yantic Cemetery in Norwich.

Betty’s love for all friends and family kept her strong, and no matter what, she just kept pumping along.
