East Lyme field hockey edges Fitch/Ledyard 2-1 with late goal

Durkee scores with two seconds remaining for field hockey victory

Groton — Katie Durkee converted a penalty stroke with just two seconds remaining as East Lyme High School pulled out a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fitch/Ledyard in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference field hockey game Tuesday.

Julia Bates, assisted by Lilly Moffett, gave the Vikings (12-3, 10-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half before the Falcons (8-8, 6-6) tied it on an unassisted goal by Zoe Pearse in the second half.

Lydia Swan made five saves in goal for East Lyme while Fitch/Ledyard's Hailie Kesterson stopped 12 shots. In other games: • Miranda Arruda scored three goals to highlight Stonington's 9-0 win over Norwich Free Academy in the ECC. Casey Boumenot and Ellie Korinek added two goals apiece for the Bears (121-1, 9-1) while Dillon Griscom and Teagan O'Brien each scored a goal and Colette Dreher and Keegan Donohue had assists. Noran Gallagher made 12 saves in goal for the Wildcats (0-15, 0-11).

H.S. swimming

• Grace Vlaun and Nikki Hahn won two individual events apiece and also swam on winning relay teams during East Lyme's 87-67 victory over Fitch/Stonington in the ECC. Vlaun won the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.91) and 100 freestyle (58.52) for the Vikings (8-1, 8-0) while Hahn captured the 200 individual medley (2:23.83) and 100 backstroke (1:09.92). Vlaun also joined Maeve Counter, Katie Keating and Mary Kathryn Taylor to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.22) while Hahn, Taylor, Keating and Kate Orefice teamed up to win the 200 medley relay (2:02.30). Alyson Lowney won the 500 free (5:51.35) for the Falcons (4-6, 4-6) and joined Madison Rea, Elizabeth Chang and Rebecca Lowney in the winning 400 free relay (4:39.54).

• Jayne Darras and Viviana Martinez were double-winners in Waterford's 88-58 win over Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech/Parish Hill in the ECC. Darras won the 200-meter freestyle (2:40.73) and 100 free (1:14.11) for the Lancers (92, 8-1) while Martinez won the 200 IM (3:02.77) and 100 butterfly (1:25.74). Darras added a third victory when she joined Sophia Kasem-Beg, Safa Danesh and Elizabeth Hawkins to win the 200 medley relay (2:41.82).

• Erin Lyons won a pair of events as Ledyard defeated NFA 83-76 in an ECC meet. Lyons won the 50 free (30:20) and 100 free (1:07.99) for the Colonels (6-4, 6-4), who also picked up individual wins from Alexandra Martinez-Garcia (200 free), Olivia Strelevitz (100 butterfly), Gabrielle Schaufler (500 free) and Madeline Johanson (100 breaststro­ke). Gloria Ng won the 200 IM (2:25.91) and 100 backstroke (1:08.93) for NFA (2-9, 2-7).

H.S. volleyball

• Cromwell posted a 25-15, 25-8, 25-18 nonconfere­nce win over New London. Marissa Parker had eight kills, two blocks and 10 digs for the Whalers (5-13) while Chaylet Cintron added eight digs, six service points, two aces and 15 assists, Yamilka Ramos had four kills and Caylee Parker had five kills, seven digs and three blocks.

• Wheeler rolled to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 nonconfere­nce win over Grasso Tech. The Lions are 10-9. Michelle Warren had 10 digs and Samarie Delgado 17 digs and three kills for the Eagles.

H.S. boys' soccer

• Kurt Mahlke scored 15 minutes into the game on an assist from Matt Kung as East Lyme blanked Prince Tech/University 1-0. Sunny Lall and Owen Brown combined for three saves for East Lyme (12-3-1).
