Waterford — Robert J. Cleary, 78, of Waterford, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in New London, on Dec. 6, 1939, the son of Edmund T. Cleary II and Constance (Garofalo) Cleary. Mr. Cleary was a graduate of New London High School, Class of 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959, serving through 1961 aboard the USS Picuda. He was employed as a steamfitter, working for the Local Union 777.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Arline Neff Cleary, whom he married on April 12, 1969, in St. Matthias Church, East Lyme. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three loving children, Robert W. Cleary, Mark A. Cleary and Karen A. Cleary Beardsley. He is also survived by his brother, Edmund T. Cleary III; his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Cleary; his son-inlaw, Philip Beardsley; and his two beautiful grandchildren, Alexander and Tristan Cleary.
He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Anne Elizabeth Cleary; and his brother, William Rowe Cleary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Paul’s Church, 170 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford, with interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. Date is yet to be confirmed. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to, Alzheimer’s Foundation and/or Parkinson’s Foundation.
