Water­ford — Robert J. Cleary, 78, of Water­ford, passed away Fri­day, Nov. 9, 2018, at his home sur­rounded by his lov­ing fam­ily.

He was born in New London, on Dec. 6, 1939, the son of Ed­mund T. Cleary II and Con­stance (Garo­falo) Cleary. Mr. Cleary was a grad­u­ate of New London High School, Class of 1958. He en­listed in the U.S. Navy in 1959, serv­ing through 1961 aboard the USS Picuda. He was em­ployed as a steam­fit­ter, work­ing for the Lo­cal Union 777.

He is sur­vived by his lov­ing wife of 49 years, Ar­line Neff Cleary, whom he mar­ried on April 12, 1969, in St. Matthias Church, East Lyme. In ad­di­tion to his wife, he is sur­vived by his three lov­ing chil­dren, Robert W. Cleary, Mark A. Cleary and Karen A. Cleary Beard­s­ley. He is also sur­vived by his brother, Ed­mund T. Cleary III; his daugh­ter-in-law, Jen­nifer Cleary; his son-in­law, Philip Beard­s­ley; and his two beau­ti­ful grand­chil­dren, Alexan­der and Tris­tan Cleary.

He was pre­de­ceased by his beloved sis­ter, Anne El­iz­a­beth Cleary; and his brother, Wil­liam Rowe Cleary.

A Mass of Chris­tian Burial will be cel­e­brated in St. Paul’s Church, 170 Rope Ferry Road, Water­ford, with in­ter­ment to fol­low in Cedar Grove Ceme­tery, New London. Date is yet to be con­firmed. There are no call­ing hours.

In lieu of flow­ers, me­mo­rial do­na­tions may be made in his name to, Alzheimer’s Foun­da­tion and/or Parkin­son’s Foun­da­tion.
