Montville wrestling (15-2) tops New London 50-22

Wrestling team wins first four matches to topple New London

New London — Montville won the first four matches and went on to beat New London 50-22 in a high school wrestling match Wednesday.

Quinn Bond (126 pounds), Sawyer Kury (132), Ken Sheehan-Heon (170) and Zackarie Navarrete (160) had pins for Montville (15-2) and teammates Branden Pederson (145), Ian Anderson (152), Mick Wynosky (138) and Derrick Deveau (285) also won their matches.

Tashua Williams (195), Jadien Mackenzie (220) and Jacob Commander (182) had pins for New London (2-2) and teammate Naaji Powell-Keyton won by major decision at 120 pounds. In other matches: • NFA registered seven pins en route to a 60-18 win over Fitch in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I match. Connor Devega (120), Theran Vanase (152), Ruben Britos (285), Mason McMahon (182), Christophe­r Grube (126), Brandon Nieto (138) and Erin Plainbull (195) had pins for the Wildcats (12-6, 1-0). Keith McDonald (160), Austin Robertson (145) and Cal Meuse (170) won by pin for Fitch (1-13, 1-1).

College wrestling

• Coast Guard, ranked 24th in Division III, beat No. 20 WPI 29-12. Nick Moreno (165) and Patrick Irwin had pins for the Bears (2-1) and teammates Parker Brunkala (125), Kenji Beato (133), JD FitzPatric­k (141), Nick Remke (165) and Paul Detwiler (197) also won their matches.

H.S. hockey

• The Eastern Connecticu­t Eagles had their 15-game home unbeaten streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss to Hand. Evan Tower gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a first-period goal, but Hand evened the score before the period ended and scored three times in the second for a 4-1 lead. Will Cannella had a goal, Ryan Huta and Kyle Marino had assists and Rylin Fowler made 16 saves for the Eagles (5-3).

H.S. girls' basketball

• Bacon Academy led 31-6 at halftime and went on to beat Ledyard 62-21 in an ECC Division II game. Katie Krupansky led Ledyard (3-5, 0-3) with nine points.

H.S. boys' basketball

• Williams School lost to St. Thomas More's junior varsity team, falling 70-60 in overtime. Nick Bonner scored 18 and Zain Alam and Grayson Guinan had 17 points each for Williams (1-4).

Men's basketball

• Babson rallied from a 42-39 halftime deficit to beat Coast Guard 8576 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game.

Noah Baldez had a career-high 27 points and six rebounds, Packy Witkowski had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Nolan Benson had 10 points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard (9-4, 0-3).
