Montville has the lead at Class S wrestling tourney

Windham — The Montville wrestling team took a day one lead at the CIAC Class S championsh­ip on Friday at Windham High.

Montville has 57 points, followed by Gilbert (52) and Canton (48). Both Montville and Gilbert have the most wrestlers to reach the quarterfin­als (11), but Montville has a 3-to-1 edge in wrestlers still in the consolatio­n round.

Gilbert has nine in the quarterfin­als and five in the wrestlebac­ks.

Two-time Eastern Connecticu­t Conference champion Killingly has a 68-66 lead over defending Class champion Foran at the Class M championsh­ips at Guilford. Guilford is third (62.5), followed by Ledyard (60.5), Avon (60) and Waterford (52.5).

Killingly has eight in the quarterfin­als and four in the consolatio­ns, while Foran has nine and two. Ledyard has the third-most wrestlers to advance (eight and two).

Simsbury leads defending champion and host Bristol Eastern, 57-55.5, at the Class L tournament. New London is tied for 19th (18) and Fitch is 21st (10). New London has three in the quarterfin­als and Fitch one.

Three-time defending champion Danbury leads Class LL with 71 points, followed by host Trumbull (62) and Southingto­n (53.5). Norwich Free Academy is eighth with seven wrestlers in the quarterfin­als.

Boys' basketball

• Silus Wiggins had 26 points as Grasso Tech overwhelme­d Vinal Tech, 81-31, in a Connecticu­t Technical Conference game that was the regular-season finale for the Eagles. Jacob Coates scored 17 for Grasso (614) and Jose Hernandez added nine points.

• Aedan Using scored a team-best 17 points to help Old Lyme beat Portland 54-39 in a Shoreline Conference game. Quinn Romeo added 11 points for the Wildcats (16-2) and Ray Doll contribute­d eight points and 10 rebounds.

• Putnam beat Wheeler, 60-43, in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division IV game. Ian Spracklin scored 21 for Wheeler (5-14, 0-8).

Girls' basketball

• Molly Butremovic scored 11 as Wheeler topped Norwich Tech, 35-30. Wheeler is 6-14. Geovonna Taitague scored 12 for the Warriors (7-13).

H.S. swimming

• Aaron Reck and Keegan Reck won two events each as ECC champion Fitch/Stonington/Ledyard/Norwich Tech beat New London 95-57. Aaron Reck won the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.74) and 500 freestyle (5:36.60) and Keegan Reck won the 50 freestyle (23.92) and 100 freestyle (53.88). AJ Murko and Ben Chidey also won events for Fitch (10-0, 10-0) and Matt Carney, Micah McKenzie, Nate McKenna, Max Cartier, Sam Heilig, Nathanael Padgett helped the team win two relays. Annette Park and Joseph Lastraglio won events for New London (0-7, 0-7) and Sara Beth Bouchard, Finella Smith, Carlos Silva and Lastraglio won the 400 freestyle relay.

• Keith Johnson and Jeffrey Ng each won two events and swam on two winning relay teams to pace Norwich Free Academy to its 103-79 win over Waterford in an ECC meet. Johnson won the 50 freestyle (27.60) and 100 backstroke (1:13.34) for the Wildcats (4-4, 4-4) and Ng won the 200 IM (2:29) and 100 breaststro­ke (1:13.78). Johnson and Ng also teamed with Wyatt Gordon and Alex Ji to win the 200 medley relay (2:11.28), and with Chase Hodgkins and Theo Kapinos to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:36.59). Ji also won the 100 freestyle (1:02.02). Kody Dow won the diving (184.70 points) for Lancers (4-6, 4-5) and Dan Estrin the 100 butterfly (1:09.64). The two also teamed with Jason Blain and Caleb Zane to win the 200 freestyle relay (2:00.57).

Men's basketball

• Nick MacDonald had 21 points and Ryo Kobayashi added 14 points and six assists as St. Thomas More beat Hoosac, 78-54. Wayne Bristol scored 18 for T-More (21-15), which will hold an ALS fundraiser at Monday's game against Putnam Science.

Men's hockey

• Colby beat Connecticu­t College 2-1 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Matt Creamer scored with 27 seconds left in the game for Conn (6-16-1, 2-14-1) while Rory Galasco had an assist and Connor Rodericks made 40 saves.

Women's hockey

• Hamilton scored a power-play goal late in the second period and held on to beat Conn College 2-1 in a NESCAC game. Freshman Melissa Alexander scored, Jordan Cross and Paige Michel had assists and Bailey Mertz made 21 saves for Conn (10-93, 6-6-3).
