CGA’s Mooney wins twice at New England D-III meet

Brunswick, Maine — Coast Guard Academy's Kaitlyn Mooney added a second individual title on Saturday by capturing the 3,000-meter race at the New England Division III indoor track and field championsh­ips on Saturday at Bowdoin College.

Mooney, a sophomore who won the 5,000 title on Friday in a meet record time of 16 minutes, 36.89 seconds, came back Saturday to add a win in the 3,000 (9:36.61) to help the Bears finish ninth in the team standings with 44 points.

Also for Coast Guard, Adora Lawrence placed second in the 400 (58.13) and Anna Beck was fifth (59.17), while Anita Green placed seventh in the 1,000 (2:59.48), Leilani Salang was fifth in the weight throw (51 feet, 2.25 inches), and three relay teams had seventh-place finishes — the 4x200 team of Caroline Jenkins, Beck, Kristina Bynum and Lawrence (1:47.75), the 4x400 team of Beck, Lawrence, Alexys Percival and Jenkins (4:06.03), and the 4x800 team of Green, Mia Huncharek, Olivia Sucki and Mooney (9:37.94.).

Connecticu­t College placed placed 14th with 23 points as junior Koko Mensah won the shot put and classmate Leila Alfaro broke a school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Alfaro finished seventh in 9.39 seconds, breaking her own record of 9.50 set in the preliminar­ies, while Mensah won the shot with a throw of 43-8.5.

On Friday, the Camels' Shannon Kennedy finished fourth in the pentathlon and set a school record (3,151). She set the record earlier in the season (3,111). She also set a school record in the long jump (17-5.5), topping the record she set earlier by four inches. Conn's Ivana Lamptey, Ellie Ebby, Alicia Palmer and Sarah Clark finished sixth in the 4x200 in a school record (1:47.42), breaking the mark from earlier in the season (1:47.91).

Men's track and field

• Coast Guard's Josiah Davis broke the second record in the 800 en route to a second-place finish at the New England Division III championsh­ips at MIT. Davis finished in 1:51.79 as the Bears finished 12th overall in the team standings. Also for the Bears, Ben Zarlengo was second in the weight throw (60-7), Michael Frick tied for fifth in the pole vault (14-8), Geoffrey Delorie was seventh in the heptathlon (4,119 points), and the distance medley relay team of Matthew Kerst, Sydney Johnson, Jeffrey Meyer and Benjamin Taminger finished fifth (8:06.29).

Conn College finished 21st with three team points as sophomore Spencer Crough placed sixth in the 600 with a personal best 1:24.08.

Women's hockey

• No. 7 Conn College came within a minute of upsetting No. 2 Middlebury, but lost 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfin­als of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament. Middlebury (15-7-3) scored twice in the final minute of regulation and Madie Leidt scored off a rebound 2:23 into overtime. Paige Michel and Erin Dillon had second-period goals for Conn (10-11-3), Lauren Helm, Elena Gualtieri, Dillon and Michael had assists and senior goalie Bailey Mertz made 31 saves.

Women's basketball

• Avery Point ends its regular season with a 93-75 win over Westcheste­r CC. Ashley Burke scored a season-high 35 points and Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 34 and matched a program record with 16 assists. Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 12 points and 19 rebounds, Julitza Delgado had 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists and Brennan had six rebounds and six steals for the Pointers.

Men's basketball

• JR Gandenberg­er of East Lyme scored a team-high 16 points and added five assists for Avery Point in 79-52 loss to Westcheste­r CC in the season finale. Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd added 11 points for the Pointers.

• St. Thomas More ended its regular season with a 60-52 loss to Navy Prep. Nick MacDonald had 16 points and five rebounds Jared Garcia had 10 points and eight rebounds, Michael Lynott scored 13 and Brendan McGuire had six rebounds and six assists for T-More (21-16).

Women's lacrosse

• Freshman Maddie Rizzuto had four goals and three assists as Coast Guard opened its season with a 14-3 win over Eastern Connecticu­t. Carter Sanderson, Annie McGoldrick and Etta Davis had two goals each and MegMarie Stanchi caused five turnovers and had three groundball­s. Mardy Budri made eight saves for Coast Guard.

Men's lacrosse

• Mitchell College lost its season opener 24-6 to Farmingdal­e. Kyle Marsh of Montville and Jacob Anderson had two goals apiece for the Mariners while Nick Loris had a goal and two assists.

Baseball

• Avery Point was swept in its season-opening doublehead­er, losing to host Mercer Community College 7-2 and 9-0. Waterford's Alex Petchark had a triple and doubled twice for the Pointers.

• Mitchell opened its season with a 6-5 win over UMass Dartmouth on Friday. Eric Marriott hit a three-run homer in the seventh to rally the Mariners from a 5-3 deficit. Freshman Doug DelaCruz of Montville hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat for Mitchell.

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard opened its season with an 8-1 loss to NYU. Coast Guard's Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Men's swimming

• Coast Guard freshman Devin McClure won the 500 freestyle in a school record 4:30.36 during Friday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championsh­ip at WPI. The Bears' Taylor Rowe finished third in the 500 freestyle (4:33.43). He was the two-time defending champion who previously held the school record (4:30.69, 2017).

Dan Jenkins, Joe Rodriguez, Tyler Dominick and John Pompay were runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay, breaking the school record (1:21.69) they set in the preliminar­ies (1:21.95). Patrick Jackson, McClure, Fuhs and Rodriguez finished third in the 400 medley relay and also set a school record (3:19.77). Jackson, Chasse Sodemann, Ross Garrett and Feller set the record last season (3:20.94). Rodriguez, the defending 50 freestyle champion, finished second (20.42) while Fuhs was third in the 200 IM (1:52.59).

• Conn's Jared Nussbaum and Charlie Adl finished fourth (4:31.12) and sixth (4:32.67), respective­ly, in the 500 freestyle at the New England Small College Athletic Conference championsh­ips on Friday at Middlebury. Marc Klepacki and Jaleel Watler, Dash Hunter and Adl also placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.29).
