Around the region

• Senior Brooke Scahill, a Ledyard High School graduate, has settled comfortably into her new college home at UMass Dartmouth. She contributed two goals and three assists in a 9-7 win over Salem State Saturday to bring her season totals to 14 goals and a team-high eight assists. Last season, Scahill excelled on the lacrosse field for Mount Ida before transferring after the school closed. • Eastern Connecticut State University freshman Matt Malcom, a catcher from East Lyme, was selected as the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week in baseball. He belted the first two home runs of his career in a doubleheader sweep of UMass Dartmouth on Sunday. He had a three-run homer in a 5-0 win in game one and a tworun homer and a single in a 12-6 win in game two. In 11 games, he's batting .421 with two homers and 11 RBI. He also has 10 assists. • Western Connecticut State University junior Ryan Reuling, a Fitch graduate, fired in five goals and added five assists in a recent 21-14 men's lacrosse victory over Cazenovia College. On Saturday, Reuling had two goals and two assists in a 14-5 win over Salem State. • Bowdoin College's Mitchell Ryan, an East Lyme graduate, wrapped up his senior season in impressive fashion. Ryan qualified for the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships and earned All-American honors in the 3-meter board by finishing eighth while executing the dive with highest degree of difficulty in the meet. He also was an All-American in the 1-meter event, placing sixth. At the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships late last month, Ryan was named the Diver of the Year for the second time. He was the repeat winner in the 1-meter and 3-meter and earned four-year high point diver status. • Junior guard Collin Sawyer had an impact on and off the court for the Brandeis men's basketball team. A New London graduate, Sawyer scored 15 points in his team's 7260 win over Rutgers-Newark in the ECAC Division III championship game. He finished the season averaging a career-best 10.6 points per game for the Judges (18-11). Last fall, Sawyer served on the college's national search committee for a new men's basketball coach after reaching out to the college president about the team having a voice. • Waterford graduate Hannah Niedojadlo is a walk-on member of the Clemson rowing team. She spent two years at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., before transferring. • Rhode Island College junior Sam Lindblom of Waterford was honored by the New England Wrestling Association, receiving honorable mention honors at 149 pounds. He went 18-16 overall with 34 takedowns and five pins and also placed seventh in his class at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship on Feb. 24.

• Coast Guard Academy junior Riley McNulty was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Co-offensive Player of the Week in men's lacrosse after finishing with a program-record 10 points on seven goals and three assists in a 12-11 overtime win over Merchant Marine on Wednesday. He also became the first player to score 100 career goals for the Bears. • The New England Wrestling Association selected Paul Detwiler as its Rookie of the Year while Kevin Bratland was named the Coach of the Year and Dylan Foley the Assistant Coach of the Year. Detwiler, an NCAA qualifier, posted a 21-7 record and took third at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. All-American AJ Aeberli (174) and heavyweight Pat Irwin earned All-NEWA first team honors and Nick Remke (165), Jon Wagner (197) and Detwiler made the second team. Kenji Beato (133), JD Fitzpatrick (141) and Christian Gosch (157) were honorable mention picks. Beato, Detwiler and Phil Rogers (174) made the all-rookie team. Beato, Fitzpatrick, Remke, Rogers, Wagner, Jeremy Berson and George McBurney were selected to the NEWA All-Academic team. To qualify for the honor, a wrestler must be a major contributor and own a grade point average of over 3.2.

Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell College freshman Madison Nicynski was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in softball. She batted .750 with a home run and seven RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Northern Vermonty. An infielder, she owns a .481 batting average with eight RBI. • Pitcher Ryan Solimine was named the NECC Rookie of the Week in baseball after tossing six shutout innings in a 13-1 non-conference win over Coast Guard. He allowed three hits while striking out four and walking one. Overall, he has a 3.86 earned run average with 20 strikeouts and two walks in 18.2 innings. • The NECC honored senior Kyle Marsh of Montville and freshman Jacob Anderson, who earned player of the week and top rookie for men's lacrosse, respectively. It was the third time Marsh, who had a team-high seven goals and two assists in three games last week, has won the award. He leads the team overall with 23 goals and eight assists. Anderson had five goals and four assists last week, scoring the game-winner against Mt. St. Vincent.

Camel highlights

• Connecticut College visits Coast Guard in a crosstown men's lacrosse battle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Seniors PJ Kelleher (11 goals, a team-high 20 assists) and Jordan Foster (a team-best 19 points, five assists) are the leading scorers for the Camels (3-4). In the first ever meeting last season, Conn eked out a 9-8 decision. Foster fired home the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left.
