Richard ‘Dick’ Goeben Richard Green Sr.

Niantic — Richard A. “Dick” Goeben of Niantic passed away April 9, 2019, at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London just a week after celebratin­g his 90th birthday. He was born April 2, 1929, in Hartford, the son of the late Charles and Huberta (Markel) Goeben.

A 1947 graduate of Hall High School in West Hartford, and a 1948 post-graduate of Cheshire Academy, he attended Brown University and received a bachelor of arts in economics in 1954, from the University of Connecticu­t where he was a member of the tennis team and the Artus (Economics) Honor Society.

Dick served overseas in Germany and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1957. After marrying the love of his life and moving to the north shore of Chicago, he launched a successful career in sales as a manufactur­er’s rep for the Grenville Davis Company, Chicago, Ill. from 1958-1979 and another 14 years with Cleary Sales Associates, Northfield, Ill. as a vice president. After raising their three children in Winnetka, Ill., they returned to their Connecticu­t roots in 1993 for their retirement years and lived happily in the house they built overlookin­g McCook Point and Niantic Bay.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Ellen Manninen Goeben; two sons, Stephen (and Kathy) Goeben of Wenham, Mass., and Charles (and Susan) Goeben of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter Laura (and Rob) Mansour of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.; and six grandchild­ren whom he adored. Nothing made him prouder or happier.

Dick had a zest for life that he shared with everyone who knew him. He loved entertaini­ng friends, boating, fishing, swimming and playing tennis and chess.

Services will be held in July at the Niantic Community Church.

The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic, is assisting the family with the arrangemen­ts.

Niantic — Richard William Green Sr., 74, of Lincoln Street, died peacefully Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born Oct. 29, 1944, in New London, the son of Frederick and Viola Bedard Green. He married Karen Ann Caruso Sept. 23, 1967, in Niantic. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Beverly, Patricia, Frederick and Charles. Richard graduated from New London High School, Class of ‘64. He served in the National Guard and was employed for over 38 years as a First Class Shipfitter at Electric Boat.

Upon retirement, he would fill his days playing on the golf course, meeting up for coffee with friends at McDonald’s, trying his luck at the casino and being the unofficial watchdog of Niantic as he made his daily rounds. Richard adoringly cared for his family’s pets and had an affection for wildlife, especially squirrels. His greatest joy was his family; the love and closeness were apparent in everything he did and said. All who knew Richard would agree this is just a snapshot of the life of a man who is so much more than this.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Karen of 51 years, his son Richard and wife Melissa Green Jr. of Niantic; daughter Heather and husband Allen Larson of Niantic; son Shay Green of East Lyme; daughter Hope Green, also of Niantic; and four cherished grandchild­ren, Wade, Benjamin, Julia and Amelia.

Richard’s family invites friends and family to join them at a celebratio­n of his life between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2019, at Langley’s Restaurant, 28 Lamphere Road, Waterford.
