CGA men's lacrosse wins its seventh straight

New London — Coast Guard won its seventh straight, beating Massachuse­tts Institute of Technology 17-10 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday.

Ryan Gochar and Benner Geurtsen scored three goals each, Trey Johnson made seven saves and Conor Rowan scored twice for Coast Guard (10-2, 3-0). In other games: • Jack Rutter had seven goals and an assist as Connecticu­t College beat Hamilton 12-9 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. PJ Kelleher had two goals and an assist, Jordan Foster score twice, Winston Palmeri had two assists and Colin Smith made 19 saves for Conn (4-9, 1-8).

Women's lacrosse

• Connecticu­t College lost to Hamilton 19-9 in a NESCAC game. Jamie Navoni had three goals and two assists, Meghan Corcoran scored three times, Kelly Wolin had a goal and two assists and Julia Loesch had a goal and an assist for Conn (3-10, 0-9).

• Babson led 13-0 at halftime and went on to beat Coast Guard 18-2 in a NEWMAC game. Haley Howard scored both goals for the Bears (4-9, 1-3).

• Mitchell College remained winless, losing to Elms 20-5 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Francesca Pinard scored three goals and Lindsey Fairbank had a goal and an assist for Mitchell (0-7, 0-4).

Girls' lacrosse

• Alexis DeLucia scored six goals and had an assist, leading Montville to a 15-4 win over NFA. Maddie Gould had three goals and an assist, Jasmine Swanson scored three times, Mackenzie Ullrich had two goals, Ashley Rewers had a goal and an assist and Morgan Orr had an assist for Montville (5-1). Mackenzie Shrewsbury scored three goals for NFA (0-5) and teammate Bridget Hinsch also scored.

College baseball

• WPI completed a three-game sweep of Coast Guard in a NEWMAC doublehead­er, winning the opener 9-3 and the second game 5-1. Jeremy Lhotka homered in each game for Coast Guard (14-13, 4-9) and teammate Will Stephens had two hits in the second game.

• John Toppa had three hits, including the 200th of his career, but UConn lost to Memphis, 7-1, in an American Athletic Conference game. The Huskies (22-13, 6-5) fell behind 3-0 before coming to bat and could not recover. Paul Gozzo's home run in the seventh inning accounted for the lone UConn run. Starter Jeff Kersten (3-2) allowed 10 hits and six runs, four earned, and struck out five with no walks over six innings.

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard lost to MIT 7-2 in a NEWMAC match. Jack Phillips was involved in both wins for the Bears (6-6, 2-2), winning at No. 5 singles and teaming with Thomas Hackett to win at No. 1 doubles.

Men's track

• Ben Zarlengo broke a pair of school records to lead Coast Guard at the Silfen Invitation­al at Connecticu­t College. Zarlengo took second in the hammer with a school-record throw of 183 feet, 9 inches, topping the 181 feet, 10 inches set by Kent Mack in 1977. He also broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 160 feet, 8 inches — topping the 159-8 Doug Brown had in 1969. Also for the Bears, James Duran was second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.57 while Ed Carroll took eighth in the triple jump (41 feet, 11.25 inches) and Jason Cho was eighth in the pole vault (11 feet, 11.75 inches).

On Friday, Jacob Pawlina and Andre Gallant of Coast Guard had second-place finishes. Pawlina took second in the javelin with a throw of 168 feet, 10 inches while Gallant posted a time of 32:33.42 in the 10,000 meters. Also for the Bears, Javon Wingate was fourth in the long jump (21 feet, 8.75 inches).

Women's track

• Coast Guard had a pair of top three finishes during the second day of the Silfen Invitation­al at Connecticu­t College. Adora Lawrence took second in the 400 meters with a time of 58.44 and Caroline Jenkins was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.30. Also for Coast Guard, Kristina Bynum placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 inches, Anna Beck was fourth in the 200 meters (26.56) and eighth in the 100 meters (13.05) while Leilani Salang placed sixth in the hammer (140 feet, 3 inches).

On Friday, Salang broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 7 inches. Salang broke her own mark of 137-2, set last season. Also for the Bears, Ariyanna Jurkowski placed fourth in the discus (128 feet, 2 inches), Olivia Suski was fifth in the 3,000 steeplecha­se (11.41.17), Nina Ragle was sixth in the 3,000 steeplecha­se with a time of 11:45.36 and Anita Green was ninth in the 1,500 meters (4:44.96).
