Police: Norwich man inappropriately touched four girls
Norwich — A city man charged last Wednesday with inappropriately touching four girls between 2014 and 2017, is scheduled to appear Thursday in the New London court where major crimes are tried.
In a warrant for the arrest of Raul Calderon, 47, of 40 Central Ave., police said three sisters and one of their friends made the accusations in August of last year. The youngest was 5 to 6 at the time of the alleged incidents while the oldest was between 9 to 12.
Calderon used to live near the sisters and often baby-sat them. The fourth girl said her two encounters happened during parties she and Calderon attended.
All four accused Calderon of inappropriately rubbing himself against them. A couple of the girls said he would do so on the couch — using pillows to hide it — or take them to his room. They also said he would use candy to bribe or reward them.
One girl accused him of rape and said he forced her to perform oral sex “more than 20 times.”
The two older sisters said they waited to tell someone because they didn't want to ruin their family's relationship with the Calderons. The middle sister reported the incidents after she changed her mind when she saw Calderon trying to touch the youngest sister.
Calderon’s daughter and her boyfriend told police they knew about some of the accusations but didn’t believe the girls. They said they hadn’t witnessed anything like what the girls described.
Calderon at first denied the allegations, then told police he could neither confirm nor deny the allegations because it’s possible he “rubbed” one of the girls the wrong way when he brushed against her arm or leg in a doorway.
Records from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital found no medical abnormalities in the sisters but that “neither supports nor discounts these allegations.” Police said the girls gave hospital staff similar accounts of what had happened.
Calderon, who is charged with four counts of risk of injury to a minor — illegal sexual contact, is being held on a $500,000 bond.
