OL girls’ lacrosse gets things started

Arias, Tinnerello lead Wildcats to Class S state tournament win

Old Lyme — Bella Arias scored six goals and Lydia Tinnerello had four goals and six assists as the 12th-seeded Old Lyme High School girls' lacrosse team beat No. 21 Berlin 18-3 in the qualifying round of the CIAC Class S tournament Friday afternoon.

Old Lyme (11-7) plays Shoreline Conference tournament champion No. 5 North Branford in the first round on Tuesday. Catharine Harris had four goals and an assist, Paige Britton had a goal and two assists and Hayden Saunders made eight saves in the victory for the Wildcats.

H.S. girls' tennis

• No. 15 Waterford swept doubles play with a 5-2 win over No. 18 Sheehan in a qualifying match in the CIAC Class M tournament. Waterford (115) plays No. 2 Naugatuck at Wilby in a first-round match on Saturday. The teams of Angela Dwelli-Anika Jannatul, Jennifer Leblanc-Kasey Kirchhoff and Nidhi Somienini-Nita Somienini won for the Lancers and teammates Alli Silva and Micky Green won their singles matches.

H.S. boys' golf

• East Lyme suffered its first loss of the season, falling 4-3 to Killingly. Chris Lackner of Killingly, which won the medal point 156-164, was the medalist with a 1-over-par 36 at Connecticu­t National Golf Club in Putnam. East Lyme (14-1), which beat Tourtellot­te 7-0, got wins from Evan Kluge (39), Logan Rolfe (40) and Dan Singer (44). Jack Aitken (38) also won his match for Killingly (14-1).

• Old Lyme lost to East Catholic 156-164 in a nonleague match on Thursday. Corey Drummond and Thomas Creagan led Old Lyme (11-3) with 39s and teammate Connor Maguire shot a 40.

H.S. softball

• Catey Battalino was 2-for3 in No. 4 Old Lyme's 6-0 loss to No. 1 Valley Regional in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament, as Valley's Addy Bullis pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

Four players earned All-Shoreline honors for Old Lyme (13-9). Maddie Cann, the Wildcats' center fielder, earned first team honors. Infielders Victoria Gage and Grace Lathrop were second team picks and catcher Paige Kolesnik was an honorable mention selection.

College track

• Coast Guard's Adora Lawrence broke her own school record and earned a spot in Saturday's 400-meter final at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championsh­ips in Geneva, Ohio. Lawrence ran a record 56.62 which was ninth in the preliminar­ies, locking up the final spot in championsh­ip heat.

For Connecticu­t College, junior Koko Mensah and senior Shannon Kennedy competed. Mensah placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 9 inches. Kennedy, who was making her first NCAA appearance, finished 19th in the heptathlon by accumulati­ng 4,444 points. She started the two-day competitio­n on a high note by lowering her own school record in the hurdles at 15.25 seconds.

College honors

• East Lyme's Matt Malcom, a freshman catcher at Eastern Connecticu­t State, was named the D3baseball.com New England Rookie of the Year and selected to its All-New England Region second team. Malcom was named Rookie of the Year by the Little East Conference earlier this month

also made second-team all-conference.

Malcom was one of only two freshmen named to the all-region team, which consisted of 14-player first, second and third teams. Each of the three teams consisted of one player at each position, one utility player, three starting pitchers and one relief pitcher. Malcom started all 39 games for the Warriors this season. He was their second-leading hitter (.360) and was the leader in several categories, including extra base hits (22), home runs (six), RBI (29) and runs (43).

• Mitchell College owns its second straight New England Collegiate Conference Champions Cup. The Mariners topped the six-team field with a .754 percentage based on regular and postseason play in all sports.

The highlight of the season came in basketball, as the Mariners claimed their second NECC title. Following a fourth-place finish in the regular season, head coach Todd Peretz ushered his squad to an upset of the top seed in the semifinals for the right to host the title game for the first time in school history. Mitchell then clipped Newbury College in overtime to secure the tournament crown and the program's second NCAA berth.

Two other programs made it to the finals of their respective NECC Championsh­ips. The baseball team, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Travis Beausoleil, set a school record with 34 wins and marched through the regular season with a league record of 15-1. The men's soccer team logged runner-up finishes in both the regular season and postseason under fourth-year head coach Damian Houlden.

• Coast Guard senior catcher Jeremy Lhotka was named a D3baseball.com all-region honorable mention selection and will play in the DII/DIII New England Intercolle­giate Baseball Associatio­n (NEIBA) All-Star game on May 31 at Dunkin' Donuts Stadium in Hartford. The game matches the College All-Stars (Divisions II and III) against the University All-Stars (Division I).

Lhotka became the first Coast Guard player since 2006 to hit over .400 as he finished the season with a .415 batting average which was second best in the NEWMAC. He finished the year with 36 RBI, the second-most in a single season at Coast Guard and his 49 hits this year are tied for the second-most in a single season while his 13 doubles are the second.

High school honors

• Three players from the Williams School boys' lacrosse team were named to the All-SENE team. Midfielder Harry Anselmi and defenders JD Delaurenti­s and Sterling Frost were selected to the team and Anselmi and Delaurenti­s also made the Eastern New England all-region team.

Anselmi, a junior, led the Blues with 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points in 10 games and had 44 groundball­s. Delaurenti­s, a sophomore, led the team with 60 groundball­s in 11 games and minutes played. Frost, a freshman, was second in ground balls with 59.
