Witnessing an act of ‘extraordinary kindness’

-

June 6, I was coming over the Gold Star Bridge heading toward home during peak traffic hour and out of the blue I witnessed an act of extraordinary kindness.

To set the scene: I was driving toward Groton, heading over the crest of the bridge, when I spotted two police cars further ahead in the break- down lane. I moved my car over a half lane in my approach to them and saw they were hugging the lane, ever so slowly moving, one car slightly in the lane protected the flank of the car ahead.

As I passed, I quickly rubbernecked and spotted perhaps three Canadian geese walking in front of these two police cars. They were in the breakdown lane waddling slowly toward Groton! My heart jumped into my throat; I was in awe: had I witnessed an escort?

I called State Police Barracks E after dinner and the dispatcher confirmed I indeed saw what I saw. There was a smile in his voice, “It was a mother and her three goslings.” I asked that he please thank all involved.

I say it again in amazement, in gratitude, and quietly ask: did they make it to Groton? “Whoever saves a life, saves the

entire world.” — The Talmud Wendy Eckholm Groton
