Day reporting did not reflect zoning opinions

Staff writer Kimberly Drelich wrote a mostly useful piece about the Groton rezoning meeting held on June 19, “Groton residents voice opinions on mixed-use zones, green districts at hearing.” Unfortunately, she gave a misleading sense of the temper of the discussion on changing Old Mystic village into a mixed-use zone.

She quotes three people who spoke against the change and two who spoke for it. For the record, a total of 11 people spoke to this issue in the public portion of the meeting, with nine against a zoning change and only two for it. This tally should have been noted by The Day writer.

Beyond that I would add that because the meeting stretched out over several hours, six additional residents of the area left before Old Mystic came up at the end. All six are my neighbors who oppose the proposed zoning change for practical and preference reasons that Groton and its hired consultant on the project (from the Horsley Witten Group) failed to consider when preparing a software-based model for rezoning Old Mystic.
