Tragedy follows ‘Comedy’ MUSIC

- — Kristina Dorsey

Flock Theatre’s summer of outdoor theater rolls out with a new production. Following on the heels of Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” in Westerly, Flock is presenting Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex.”

They are staging “Oedipus” July 11-21 at Wilcox Park in Westerly and then July 25-Aug. 4 at Connecticut College Arboretum in New London.

And they are bringing “Comedy of Errors” Aug. 15-25 at Connecticut College ArSboretum in New London. Got that? “Comedy of Errors” is a typically tangled comic Shakespeare tale, with complications arising from the fact that two sets of long-lost identical twins end up in the same area.

If you’re more interested in drama and tragedy, well, “Oedipus Rex” is your show. King Laius has been murdered, and King Oedipus has succeeded him, but Oedipus has a bleak prophecy hanging over his head. The Greek chorus in the show helps tell the story “enhanced with American Sign Language and larger-than-life puppets,” according to Flock.
