Former Montville star earns NECBL’s premier award

Mystic Schooners is named the NECBL’s Top Pro Prospect on Tuesday, the league’s premier distinctio­n.

Mystic — TT Bowens of the Mystic Schooners, a former Montville High School star and rising junior at Central Connecticu­t State University, was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Top Pro Prospect, as announced Tuesday by league commission­er Sean McGrath.

The league leader in home runs (16) and RBI (53), Bowens set an NECBL single-season record in RBI, helping Mystic finish third in the Southern Division. He batted .331 (57for-157), while ranking fourth in the league with 41 runs scored, second in total bases (109), tied for first in extra-base hits (25) and first in slugging percentage (.694). Bowens had nine doubles on the year and drew 20 walks.

Bowens, a first baseman, earned first team All-NECBL honors on Monday along with fellow Schooners Trey McLoughlin of Fairfield (starting pitcher) and Nick Robino of Wagner (relief pitcher).

Also Tuesday, Mystic's David Beam (East Tennessee State) was named the league's Rookie of the Year. Beam, an outfielder, ranked in the top 10 in the NECBL in batting average at .357, finighing with 46 hits in 129 at-bats with three home runs, 26 RBI and 35 runs scored in 36 games. He ranked fifth in the league with a .444 on-base percentage.

Other major award winners announced Tuesday were Joey Porricelli of North Adams, named the Christophe­r Ashmos 10th Player Award recipient; Ryan Murphy of Vermont, Robin Roberts Best Starting Pitcher; Nander De Sedas of Martha's Vineyard, Best Defensive Player; Aaron Haase of Upper Valley, Joe Nathan Top Relief Pitcher; Cole Frederick of Upper Valley, batting champion; Sam Cochrane of Winnipesau­kee, Most Improved Player; Jay Mendez of Martha's Vineyard, Joel Cooney Manager of the Year; and Anthony Letizio, Umpire of the Year.

Potvin scholarshi­ps awarded

• The Christophe­r Potvin Scholarshi­p Fund presented 35 $1,000 scholarshi­ps Sunday at a banquet held at Fox Hopyard Golf Club in East Haddam. Recipients were:

Tigers fall

• The Tri-City ValleyCats took a 7-0 lead after three innings and held on to beat the Connecticu­t Tigers 7-5 in a New York-Penn League baseball game Monday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

The Tigers (26-30) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eliezer Alfonzo and Jordan Verdon had RBI doubles and Kingston Liniak singled home a run. Kona Quiggle and Alfonzo had RBI singles in the eighth. Alfonzo was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

ECML playoffs

• The Three Rivers Sonics beat Groton 10-2 in the first game in the best-of-three Eastern Connecticu­t Major League playoffs series on Monday night at Washington Park in Groton. The winner of the series plays the Panera Pirates for the title.

Saxon Herbert pitched a one-hitter for the win, striking out nine with one walk. Kyle Richards was 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI, Aaron Beeney singled and tripled, Anthony Viteritto drove in two runs and Herbert singled and doubled for the Sonics. Axel DeJesus had Groton's hit.
