The Day

Come blow your horn

- — Rick Koster

Chopin or that Bach guy might argue the point, but a lot of hardcore music folks believe big band swing is the most timeless musical style out there. So dance on THAT, Wolfgang Amadeus!

New London’s Dick Campo Big Band, who’ve been exploring and nuancing swing for — count ‘em! — 55 years now, are still active and bringing the highly nuanced and energic noise. It’s only been five years since the outfit released two CDs/DVDs, “The Dick Campo Big Band Live at the Garde Arts Center” and “Dick Campo Big Band Live at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA.”

It makes sense they’d capture in-performance events; the band is incredible onstage. See for yourself Friday when the Campo group performs in New London at Daddy Jack’s. Dick Campo Big Band, 7 p.m. Friday, Daddy Jack’s, 181 Bank St., New London; $10; (860) 444-8888.
