Around the region

• Norwich Free Academy graduate J'Von Brown is anchoring the offensive line for the Central Connecticu­t State University football team. A 6-foot-3, 320-pound senior, Brown was named to the Athlon FCS Preseason All-American team. Last season, he was an All-New England selection. The Blue Devils are off to a 3-0 start.

• Montville’s Lucas Chaude, a junior midfielder, has contribute­d to the Eastern Connecticu­t State University men’s soccer team’s impressive 5-0 start. Chaude has appeared in five games off the bench, chipping in one assist for the Warriors who’ve allowed just one goal this season.

• Junior forward Helen Heyse of Norwich scored an unassisted goal for the Western Connecticu­t field hockey team in a 4-1 win over Elms College earlier this month.

• St. Michael’s College junior Kara Bassett, a St. Bernard graduate from New London, scored her first two careers goals and added an assist in a recent 9-0 rout of Lincoln (Pa.) University.

• Jillian Sykora, a senior from Waterford, had eight digs for UMass Dartmouth in a 3-0 loss to Wellesley last week. She was named a team co-captain. In other UMass Dartmouth news, senior Ella Rath of Pawcatuck was selected as a co-captain for the women’s soccer team. A graduate of Stonington, she was a Little East Conference first team pick last season after scoring 10 goals, including four game-winners, and adding two assists. • Simmons University freshman outside hitter Sydney

Iannantuon­o, who’s from East Lyme, had her second double-double of the season, finishing with 12 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 win over UMass Boston last week. She also chipped in two blocks and two assists. • Isabelle Riker, a sophomore defender from East Lyme, has started the first four games for the Union College women’s soccer team. • Endicott College sophomore wide receiver Shea

McManaway, who graduated from NFA, caught a touchdown pass in a 55-27 win over Framingham State. He finished with two catches for 11 yards in the season opener.

Mariners riding a wave

• The New England Collegiate Conference recognized

three Mitchell College athletes for their contributi­ons last week. Freshman J'Naya Kelly of East Lyme became the first Mariner women’s soccer player to earn rookie of the week honors since 2014. Kelly scored game-winning goals against Fisher College and Northern Vermont-Lyndon. She also added an assist to increase her team-high point total to five. The Mariners (2-2) already have topped last year’s win total. In men’s soccer, freshman Cristian Barrales was named the rookie of the week after scoring two goals in a win and a tie last week. He netted the game-winner in the second overtime versus Worcester State. He’s appeared in four games, making two starts for the Mariners (1-2-1). NFA graduate Evan Carney received rookie of the week honors for men’s cross country. In his collegiate debut last week, he placed ninth out of 50 runners at the Mitchell Invitation­al. He covered the five kilometer course in 18:16.3.

Tracking the Bears

• Two Coast Guard Academy athletes were honored for their achievemen­ts last week in New England

Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play. In women’s soccer, freshman Sarah Schollenbe­rger was named defensive player of the week after making seven saves and posting a shutout against Salve Regina for her first collegiate victory. She improved to 1-3 with a 1.95 goals against average. Junior Veronica Hine was selected as defensive player of the week in women’s volleyball. Hine helped the Bears go 3-0, averaging 4.79 digs per set. Her performanc­e against Williams and Union helped her earn a spot on the Union Invitation­al all-tournament team.

Camel highlights

• Connecticu­t College senior Danny Aschale was selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s cross country performer of the week after finishing first in the Bates Super XC Shootout. He posted a winning time of 25 minutes, 23.6 seconds, on the 8 kilometer course. • Freshman Gillian Iacobucci played a role in four of Conn field hockey’s six goals last week, chipping in a goal and three assists in two games. • Please send college note submission­s to g.keefe@ theday.com
