East Lyme boys hold off Woodstock 3-2 for big ECC Div. I soccer victory
Woodstock — Kurt Mahlke scored the game-winning goal with under a minute remaining, sending East Lyme past Woodstock Academy 3-2 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys' soccer game Monday.
The Vikings watched Woodstock rally from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the score with seven minutes left before Mahlke collected a loose ball off a free kick and found the back of the net.
Cooper Pazzaglia and Jonathan Northcutt each contributed a goal and an assist for East Lyme (6-2-1, 3-0-1), and goalie Owen Brown had six saves. In other games: • Tenzin Jamphel scored in the first half to account for the game's only goal, lifting St. Bernard past Grasso Tech 1-0. Goalie Martin Arvidson made three saves to record the shutout for the Saints (3-33). Joel Potter had seven saves for Grasso (3-4-1).
• Avery Welch scored three goals and Michael Milazzo added a goal and two assists in Old Lyme's 4-2 win over Westbrook in Shoreline Conference action. Angus Tresnan had a goal, Jesper Selberberg added an assist and goalie Ryan Tetreault made nine saves for the Wildcats (5-1-2, 3-1-2).
Girls' soccer
• Caitlin Daley had 17 saves as Norwich Free Academy played ECC Division I leader East Lyme to a scoreless tie. NFA is 3-51, 1-2-1. Avery Owen had four saves for the Vikings (6-3-2, 3-0-1).
• Fitch upset reigning ECC champion Woodstock 2-1 for its first Division I win of the season.
Maddie Catlett scored the first goal on a penalty kick for the Falcons (3-7, 1-3) while Avery Lyon scored the game-winner following a direct kick.
• Sophomore Cassandra Roman scored two goals in New London's 4-2 win over Griswold in ECC Division III action. Sophomore Olivia Goode and junior Emilia Skrabacz each added a goal for the Whalers (3-6, 1-4).
• Vanessa Benjamin's goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Stonington to a 2-1 victory over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division II matchup. Carly Constantine also scored for the Bears (5-5, 2-3), and goalie Tori LoPresto stopped six shots.
• St. Bernard and Ledyard battled to a scoreless draw in ECC Division III action. The Saints held an 18-17 edge in shots. Lindsey Reilly had 11 saves for St. Bernard (4-3-2, 2-1-2) and Savannah Wahrer made 11 saves for Ledyard (6-1-1, 3-1-1).
• Kaylee Armenia scored two unassisted breakaway goals in Old Lyme's 2-0 shutout of Montville. Goalie Sam Gray made six saves for the Wildcats (61-1) while Julia Beaupre had 14 saves for Montville (3-5-1).
• First-half goals by Rylee Valliere and Barbara Rosales lifted Windham to a 2-0 win over Wheeler in an ECC Division IV matchup. Addie Hauptmann stopped 21 shots in goal for Wheeler (0-9, 0-5).
H.S. volleyball
• Hannah Avila had 13 digs and 19 assists as Ledyard swept New London 25-23, 25-19 and 28-26. Tajeah Winston and Marissa Howard had six kills apiece and Paige Perkins had five kills for the Colonels (6-5). Ana Matos led New London (3-6) with 18 assists and seven digs while Lizbeth Nunez had 17 assists and 10 service points and Jayden Burns added 11 service points, two aces and two kills.
• Karly Morales had 28 assists and Nora Ryan 21 kills as Fitch swept Plainfield 25-10, 25-18, 25-22. Marlo Sims had 12 digs and Aria Lupo added 10 digs for Fitch (6-4).
• Olivia Tetreault had seven digs and Leah Fouquette added six digs in Old Lyme's 3-0 loss to Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference. Games scores were 2510, 25-16 and 25-13. The Wildcats fell to 2-9 overall, 0-9 in the league.
• Sidney Meneses chipped in 22 digs and eight kills to power NFA past Montville 3-1. Game scores were 26-24, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-23. Sam Tracey had 14 kills and Sara Ericson had six kills and 40 assists for NFA (4-5). For Montville (6-5), Brooke Taylor had 19 assists and 17 digs, MacKenzie Clark had 20 assists, 12 digs and three blocks and Anna Kreitlow added 20 digs.
Field hockey
• Emily Crandall scored East Lyme's only goal in a 3-1 loss to unbeaten East Greenwich, R.I. Natale Joy Taylor added an assist for the Vikings (6-2-1).
