Avery Point drops opener

Groton — The Avery Point women's basketball team dropped its season opener on Sunday, falling to Howard Community College 104-82.

Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds and Old Lyme's Abby Stone had 22 points and six rebounds for the Pointers. Sarah Wisniewski had 16 points and six rebounds and Kalianna Dingui scored 12 for Avery Point.

Men's cross country

• Coast Guard's Jacob McGlumpy earned all-conference honors with his 13th-place finish in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference meet at Franklin Park in Boston. McGlumpy finished in 26:51 as Coast Guard came in third. No. 12 MIT won its 22nd straight NEWMAC championsh­ip. Coast Guard took places 20-25 with Matt Doyle (27:24), Thomas Jordon (27:24), Adam VanDeren (27:29), Greg Costello (27:30), Joseph Roth (27:31) and Ryan Von Brock (27:36).

• Connecticu­t College finished sixth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference meet on Saturday at Williamsto­wn, Mass. Danny Aschale and Jeffrey Love of Conn earned all-NESCAC honors, with Aschale finishing fourth (25:45) and Love 13th (26:11). Other Conn runners were Ben Vasquez (39th, 26:55), Ethan Milsark (48th, 27:03) and Colm Seigne (73rd, 27:38).

Women's cross country

• Coast Guard finished fifth in the NEWMAC meet as No. 3 MIT won its 12th straight title. Olivia Suski led the Bears with a 25th-place finish in 23:53 while Kirsten Carson was 26th (23:56), Mia Huncharek was 28th (24:03) and Emma Sims was 29th (24:05). Other Coast Guard finishers were Savannah Olyniec (33rd, 24:17), Elizabeth Carter (52nd, 25:11) and Taylor Winters (56th, 25:19).

• Connecticu­t College finished ninth in the NESCAC meet on Saturday. Conn's Meredith Cronin and Rachel House made all-NESCAC as Cronin was fifth in 22:19 and House was 12th in 22:51. Other Conn runners were Caroline Stevenson (63rd, 24:38), Birgitta Salvesen-Quinn (69th, 24:54) and Julianna Donovan (105th, 25:10).

Men's soccer

• Mitchell College was eliminated from the New England Collegiate Conference tournament with a 2-1 loss to No. 5 Elms. The game was tied at 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes and Elms won the penalty kick round 4-2. No. 4 Mitchell (4-10-2) got an unassisted goal from Mason Rubino in the 45th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Former NFA standout Seth Strader made three saves for Mitchell.

Field hockey

• Freshman Claire Vandewerth scored two goals as No. 3 UConn beat UMass 5-1. Svea Boker, Maddy Wray and Marie Auer also scored goals for UConn (16-3).

Men's hockey

• UConn lost to Merrimack 3-2 in a Hockey East game. Kale Howarth and Ruslan Iskhakov scored goals and Tomas Vomacka made 18 saves for UConn (2-3-1, 1-1).
