Ledyard, OL, Stonington earn honor from CIAC
Cheshire — Ledyard, Old Lyme and Stonington were among 20 schools to be selected as CIAC Michaels Achievement Cup exemplary programs on Tuesday.
The award recognizes state schools for their achievements for the 2018-19 academic year were selected by a committee "for their creative and comprehensive efforts implementing the CIAC Class Act Schools sportsmanship program."
The Class Act School program, which began in 2016, is designed to empower schools and specifically students to enhance sportsmanship.
"The Class Act Sportsmanship program guides schools in creating a positive atmosphere through the passion of sport," CAS-CIAC executive director Glenn Lungarini said in a release. "The CIAC is proud to recognize our Michaels Cup recipients for their creativity in inspiring school spirit within their student bodies."
All 20 schools will be honored during the CIAC Sportsmanship Conference on Thursday at the AquaTurf in Southington. The other schools selected were Barlow, Bloomfield, Brookfield, Canton, Cheshire, East Catholic, Foran, Glastonbury, Law, New Milford, Shepaug Valley, Simsbury, Shepaug Valley, St. Paul, Suffield, Westbrook, Weston and Wolcott Tech.
H.S. swimming
• Waterford finished 10th in the CIAC Class S championships in New Haven. The Lancers scored 185 points, led by Lily Watson's sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.23 seconds. Weston won the meet with a score of 893.5 and Ledyard was 21st at 55.5.
Women's basketball
• Former Waterford standout Rebekah Sanders scored 30 points and had 21 rebounds as Avery Point beat Quinsigamond 117-50 for its fourth straight win. Ashley Burke scored 20, Kalianna Dingui had 14 points and eight rebounds, Old Lyme's Abby Stone scored 14 and Julitza Delgado had 12 points and five steals for Avery Point (4-1).
• Connecticut College lost to Emmanuel 66-48 in a nonleague game. Claire Gulbin led Conn (2-1) with 11 points.
Men's basketball
• Avery Point rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Quinsigamond 60-58. Tyler Zegray had 22 points, Cyrus Sprague scored 11 and Waterford's Trevor Yeomans had 10 points for the Pointers (2-5).
Men's hockey
• Conn College rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Albertus Magnus 8-5. Anthony Quatieri scored three goals and had two assists, Ryan Petti had a goal and three assists, Jacob Moreau and Jeff Thompson had a goal and an assist each and Kyle Moss and Matt Creamer had two assists each for Conn (2-1).
Women's hockey
• Samantha Benoit scored twice as Norwich beat Conn College 5-0. MJ Peters (25) and Courtney Peyko combined to make 32 games for Conn (0-3).
Black Wolves trade Suitor
• The New England Black Wolves traded Andrew Suitor to the New York Riptide for a conditional fourth round pick in the 2022 NLL Entry Draft. The pick will be in the third round should Suitor appear in nine or more games for New York this season. Suitor was acquired by New England from Vancouver in 2018.
