Ledyard wrestlers claim four titles at BC Invitation­al

Bristol — Ledyard High School had four individual winners to place third in the team standings at the Bristol Central Invitation­al wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Connor Doran (113 pounds), Caden Foote (145), Brayden Grim (160) and Davin McIver (285) took home championsh­ips for the Colonels, while Shea Kenyon (106) and Mason Barnett (152) each placed second and Caleb Phillips (120), Jacob Foster (132) and Justin Kinney (220) each took home sixth-place finishes. In other matches: • Waterford finished third in the 12-team Whippet Duals at Windham, defeated Amity 51-27 in the consolatio­n final. The Lancers (5-2) went 2-1 in the round-robin portion of the tournament, defeating St. Paul 66-18 and Berlin 54-28 while losing to Guilford 54-30. Waterford had five wrestlers go 4-0, including Mason Concascia (120), who pinned all four opponents. Donald Mellon (145), AJ Sachatello (152, 160), Jackson Harshberge­r (195) and Jeremiah Harshberge­r (220) also had perfect days.

• Norwich Free Academy went 2-2 at the Somers Duals, defeating Conard 62-18 and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 48-33 while losing to Greenwich 48-36 and Maloney 42-30. Jaiden James (106), Connor DeVega (126) and Mason McMahon (182) all went 4-0 for the Wildcats (7-5), each pinning three of their four opponents.

• Sawyer Kury was runner-up at 145 pounds as Montville placed sixth at the Warde Invitation­al. Quinn Bond (126) finished third and Brandon Pedersen (152), Raphael Vogt (182), Zach Doiron (220) and heavyweigh­t Somuadina Agunyego all placed fifth.

H.S. hockey

• Steve Turchetta scored a pair of goals as the Eastern Connecticu­t Eagles defeated Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe 5-2. It was the Eagles first win in program history over a Division I program. The game was tied at 2-2 in the second period when Ryan LoVetere scored an unassisted goal to give the Eagles (4-2) the lead for good. Turchetta scored both of his goals in the third period, assisted by LoVetere and Will Cannella. Ashton Baltes and Kyle Marino also scored for the Eagles, LoVetere wound up with a pair of assists and goalie Wes Williamson made 34 saves.

H.S. gymnastics

• Lydia Laskey won the beam (8-5) and all-around (33.2) to lead Stonington past Fitch, 132.65-80.75, in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference meet. Katya Torruella won the beam (8.2) and was second in the all-around (33.05), Hanna Laskey won the bars (8.8) and was third in the all-around (33.0), and Lila Rich tied with Wheeler's Amanda Regine to win the vault (8-2) and was fourth in the all-around (31.8) for Stonington. Lyndsay Denman was third in the vault (7.9) and Madison Porter was third on the beam (8.0) for Fitch.

H.S. football

• The Thames River Crusaders had four players selected to the All-Connecticu­t Technical Conference football team — seniors Roark Ryan (defensive line), Hamlet Chaljub (offensive line), senior Zair Alexander (linebacker) and freshman Seth Cunningham (running back).

Men's basketball

• Tyler Perez (16 points) led four Coast Guard Academy players in double figures in a 68-61 win over Marymount (Va.) in the York College Spartan Classic. Noah Baldez had 15 points, Packy Witkowski 13 points and Jason Frazer 12 points for Coast Guard (5-4), which will play Albertus Magnus in Sunday's title game at 2 p.m.

• Zach Bromfeld and Kevin McAuliffe both scored 14 for Vassar in its 60-39 win over Connecticu­t College. Daniel Draffan had eight points and six rebounds for Conn (3-7).

Women's basketball

• New England College outlasted Mitchell College 80-75 in overtime in the Mariners' New England Collegiate Conference opener. Amina Wiley had 21 points and 24 rebounds Mitchell (4-7 overall) while Kelsey Hernandez added 19 points, Le'Sandra Turner had 16 and New London's Leilani McClellan finished with 15 points.

Women's hockey

• Freshman Camille Phelan scored three goals and junior Erin Dillon had a goal and three assists to lead Conn College to a 9-0 victory over Salem State. The Camels (7-3) have won seven straight games. Goalie Carly Denora made nine saves to earn the shutout.

Wolves trade Downs

• The New England Black Wolves traded forward Dereck Downs to the Calgary Roughnecks for a third round pick in the 2020 and 2022 National Lacrosse League drafts. Downs, selected by New England in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, had 16 goals and seven assists during the 2019 season. The Black Wolves (3-0) are idle until Jan. 18 when they host the Philadelph­ia Wings at 7:30 p.m.

Te’a Cooper had a career-high 32 points, and No. 6 Baylor scored 29 straight points to spark a 77-56 win over Oklahoma on Saturday. Cooper, a graduate transfer guard, made 14 of 22 shots and had six rebounds and four assists. Baylor center Lauren Cox scored 14 points in her second game back from a foot injury. The 6-foot-4 senior made 5 of 17 shots and grabbed six rebounds in 34 minutes. Juicy Landrum added 12 points for the Lady Bears (11-1, 1-0 Big 12), who extended their conference win streak to 43 games and their league road win streak to 37 games.

Taylor Robertson scored 20 points for Oklahoma. The nation’s leader in 3-pointers made 4 of 12 from long range.

Madi Williams added 14 points for the Sooners (7-6, 0-1). Oklahoma’s Ana Llanusa, who averages 17.8 points per contest, fouled out after scoring three points.

Jessi Loera scored 13 points with seven assists and five rebounds and Gonzaga overcame a season-high 23 turnovers to defeat San Diego for its 12th straight win.

Jill Townsend added 11 points and LeeAnne Wirth had 10 for the Bulldogs (14-2, 3-0 West Coast Conference), who made up for their sloppiness by pounding the Toreros (8-7, 2-2) 40-17 on the boards.

Gonzaga had nine turnovers in the first quarter but jumped ahead 7-2 and held on for a 12-10 lead. Loero had a pair of baskets as the Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run and it was 27-16 at the half.

The lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

Kate Cain scored 19 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead Nebraska to a victory over Minnesota.

Cain was 9-of-13 shooting while Hannah Whitish and Sam Haiby combined for eight 3-pointers in scoring 17 points apiece for the Cornhusker­s (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten), who were coming off a 78-70 loss that snapped a sixgame winning streak. No. 17 Gonzaga 57, San Diego 42 Nebraska 72, No. 24 Minnesota 58
