Pagan scores career-best 26 to lead Stony Brook past Maine

New London grad goes 13-for-14, lifts Stony Brook past Maine in America East

Stony Brook, N.Y. — India Pagan of New London was 13-for-14 shooting for a career-high 26 points Sunday as the Stony Brook University women's basketball team topped two-time defending America East champion Maine 73-69.

Pagan's shooting percentage (.929) was second in program history to Jessica Smith's 1.000 (11-for-11) against Providence on Dec. 7, 2004. A 2017 graduate of New London High School who led the Whalers to the Class LL state championsh­ip and The Day's former All-Area Girls' Basketball Player of the Year, Pagan's previous career high was 25 against Bucknell on Dec. 29.

With Stony Brook trailing 4140, Pagan, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, scored the first eight points of a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter and the Seawolves led the rest of the way.

"My teammates just kept feeding me the ball," Pagan, named to the preseason All-America East team, said in a press release on the Stony Brook web site. "They trusted me. That's how I really get all the buckets . ... It was a good win for our team."

Pagan added three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots and is averaging 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. She was named the America East Player of the Week on Dec. 23.

Stony Brook improved to a program-record 14-1 overall and now has opened America East play with consecutiv­e victories. The Seawolves' 11-game winning streak is the program's longest in the Division I era. In other games: • Babson beat Connecticu­t College 67-56 in the consolatio­n game of Babson's Judy Pearson Tournament. Sami Ashton scored 19 points and had four assists and three steals, Dana Muckstadt had 11 rebounds and blocked three shots, Casey Walsh scored 11 and Emily Tripp had five rebounds for Conn (4-7).

Men’s basketball

• Albertus Magnus beat Coast Guard 103-95 in the consolatio­n game of the York College Spartan Classic. Justin Kane had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Coast Guard (5-5). Tyreek Perkins scored 20 points for Albertus Magnus (11-1).

H.S. girls’ basketball

• Leah Pion scored 10 points and had five rebounds and three steals as Wheeler beat Tourtellot­te 38-31 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division IV game on Saturday. Sam Caster scored five and had 10 rebounds and Addie Hauptmann had eight points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks for Wheeler (5-1, 1-1).
