Ledyard girls roll past Tourtellot­te

Thompson — Sam Money scored 15 points as Ledyard picked up its first win of the season with a 39-23 girls' basketball victory over Tourtellot­te.

Tallie Williams added 10 points and nine steals for the Colonels (1-5). In other girls' basketball news: • Brooke Praskiewic­z scored 22 points as Hale-Ray rolled to a 55-32 win over Grasso Tech in a non-conference game. Sophie Byrne scored 12 to lead the Eagles (1-4) while Samarie Delgado and Ruth Munton added eight points apiece.

• New London, which was ranked fifth in the GameTimeCT.com/New Haven Register preseason poll, moved up to second in the first regular-season poll.

The Whalers (6-1), who host Waterford on Tuesday at 7 p.m., trail only top-ranked Notre Dame of Fairfield, which beat New London 6356 in the final of the Appalachia­n Classic on Dec. 28 in Fairfield.

Men's swimming

• Charlie Adl, Dash Hunter, Mitch Lockwood and Jared Nussbaum won two individual events apiece as Connecticu­t College defeated Grinnell (Iowa) 149-85 in Naples, Fla.

Adl won the 100 freestyle (46.29) and 200 free (1:41.87) for the Camels while Hunter captured the 100 butterfly (52.30) and 100 breaststro­ke (1:00.89), Lockwood won the 50 free (22.36) and 100 backstroke (55.27) and Nussbaum won the 500 free (4:41.99) and 1,000 free (9:43.02).

Women's swimming

• Vaughn Ammon and Maddie Ford were double-winners as Conn College defeated Grinnell (Iowa) 161-76 in Naples, Fla.

Ammon won the 50 freestyle (25.31) and 500 free (5:17.34) for the Camels while Ford captured the 100 butterfly (58.59) and 200 free (1:55.70).

College honors

• Mitchell College freshman Alfonzo Stokes was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week in men's basketball. Stokes averaged 4.0 points and 3.3 rebounds during a three-game trip to Florida, including a 10-point, 7-rebound effort against Johnson & Wales (Fla.).

• Mitchell swept the NECC weekly awards in women's basketball as sophomore Amina Wiley was named Player of the Week and New London freshman Leilani McClellan was named Rookie of the Week. Wiley averaged 19.0 points and 15.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent during the winter break while McClellan averaged 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals during the winter break and shot 53 percent from the field.

• Eastern Connecticu­t State University's Seth Thomas, a sophomore forward from Norwich Free Academy, was named Little East Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball. Thomas averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games for the Warriors, shooting 63.9 percent from the floor.
