Old Lyme’s Using named SLC Player of the Year

New London girls stunned by No. 30 Hall in first round

Old Lyme — Old Lyme's Aedan Using was named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year in boys' basketball on Monday.

Using, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, was a Division V first team all-state selection as a junior after leading the Wildcats to the conference and state tournament championsh­ip games.

Using, who will continue is career at Brandeis University next season, was joined on the All-Shoreline first team by teammate Brady Sheffield, a senior guard, while guard Ray Doll made the second team and forward Jared Ritchie made honorable mention. Both are also seniors.

Old Lyme (20-1) is the top-seed in the SLC tournament and will host No. 5 Cromwell in Tuesday's semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Cromwell beat Old Lyme in the 2019 SLC final.

Girls' basketball

• Sophia Bell had 29 points and 16 rebounds as No. 22 Stonington defeated No. 11 Granby 62-50 in the Class M first round. Zoe Ribeiro added 20 points and Sophia Fernholz 12 rebounds for the Bears (9-12), who at No. 6 Morgan in Thursday's second round.

• Alexis DeLucia had 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals as No. 20 Montville outlasted No. 13 Prince Tech 56-47 in the Class M first round. Emma Hillman added 13 points and five rebounds for the Indians (11-12), who visit No. 4 Bloomfield in Thursday's second round, while Jill Murallo had 12 points and six assists.

• No. 30 Hall upset No. 3 New London 45-29 in the Class LL first round. Wendy Gethers had seven points and 10 rebounds to lead the Whalers, who finish 18-5, while Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatric­k finished with seven points and eight rebounds.

• No. 16 Sport Sciences defeated No. 17 Norwich Tech 62-29 in the Class M first round. Geovonna Taitague scored eight points for the Warriors, who finish 11-11, while Kiara Jerard had eight rebounds and Kaylee Gray seven rebounds.

Men's basketball

• St. Thomas More has been seeded fourth for the upcoming New England Prep School Class AAA tournament and will host No. 5 Bridgton Academy on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The winner will play at No. 1 Brewster Academy in Saturday's semifinals.

College honors

• UConn senior Christian Vital was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball for the first time. He averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, four steals and three assists while leading the Huskies to two wins. Freshman James Bouknight earned a spot on the AAC's weekly honor roll after averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.

• Mitchell College freshman Tyler McManus was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week in men's lacrosse. McManus scored three goals as the Mariners beat Mass. College of Liberal Arts 18-6 for their first win.

• Mitchell freshman Kacee Hirst of Plainfield was named NECC Rookie of the Week in softball. Hirst, a pitcher, started all four games over the weekend and Florida for the Mariners and went 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA, including a complete-game in her collegiate debut when she also had a two-run game-winning single to beat Carbrini 6-5. She also pitched a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Rosemont.

• Nichols College senior DeAnte Bruton of New London and Ledyard High was named the Commonweal­th Coast Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball for the third time this season. The guard averaged 38 points and 11 rebounds to help the Bison capture their fourth straight CCC title. He scored 36 points in a win quarterfin­al win over Roger Williams, including the go-ahead layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, added a career-high 40 points in a win over Gordon in the semis, then had 38 points and 14 rebounds in a 76-75 win over No. 1 Endicott in the title game .
